Prime Video is bringing Stargate back online. The Amazon-owned streamer has ordered a new series in the iconic sci-fi universe, marking the franchise’s first TV installment since Stargate Universe ended in 2011.
A New Chapter From a Familiar Voice
The new series, titled Stargate, comes from Amazon MGM Studios and creator Martin Gero. Gero previously worked as a writer and producer across all three live-action Stargate shows.
“Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a story editor on Stargate: Atlantis,” Gero said. “I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series. Stargate taught me everything about making television. It’s written into my DNA. I’m thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this franchise into its next phase. For those who kept the gate active, this one’s for you. And for those new to our world, you’re in for something extraordinary.”
A Long Legacy
Stargate began in 1994 as a feature film written by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich and directed by Emmerich. The movie launched a universe that grew into Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe, two direct-to-DVD films, an animated series, and a 2018 web show.
The new Stargate series will be the first TV entry in more than a decade.
Plot Details Under Wraps
Prime Video describes the project only as a “bold new chapter” in the franchise. No story details have been released.
Gero will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner. Executive producers also include Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures, along with Devlin and Emmerich. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, key creative figures from the franchise’s earlier shows, will serve as consulting producers.
Amazon’s Vision for the Future
“Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos,” said Nick Pepper, head of U.S. SVOD TV development at Amazon MGM Studios. “In partnership with our extraordinary creative team, we’re honored to open this next gate and bring a visionary new chapter to our global Prime Video audience. This series will honor the franchise’s rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future.”
A Strategic Move Years in the Making
Amazon first signaled interest in new Stargate projects in 2022, following its acquisition of MGM. The original film starred James Spader and Kurt Russell. Stargate SG-1 followed with a ten-season run led by Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge. Stargate Atlantis extended the universe from 2004 to 2008.
Now, after years of speculation, the gate is opening once again.
