The LEGO Group is turning one of gaming’s most recognizable consoles into a new building set. The company announced the 1,911-piece LEGO PlayStation set during PlayStation’s State of Play broadcast on Sept. 3.
A Classic Console Rebuilt in LEGO
The set recreates the original PlayStation console at nearly 1:1 scale. The finished model measures more than 6 cm high, 26 cm wide and 19 cm deep.
LEGO added several interactive details to capture the look and feel of the original hardware. The model includes functional Open and Power buttons, along with a brick-built controller that plugs directly into the console.
Two Games Hidden Inside
The console also contains two hidden buildable dioramas inspired by classic PlayStation games. Fans can keep the scenes stored inside the console or remove them for separate display.
One diorama features a miniature track from Gran Turismo, which was originally released in 1997, complete with small cars. The second recreates a scene from Ape Escape, released in 1999, and features the game’s red or blue monkey helmet.
The LEGO PlayStation, set number 72306, will launch first through LEGO Insiders Early Access on Oct. 1. The set will become available to all customers on Oct. 4.
Fans will be able to purchase the set through LEGO.com/PlayStation, LEGO Stores and select retailers. The release combines LEGO building with PlayStation nostalgia while recreating the console that helped define a generation of gaming.
