Paramount+ Cancels Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

PremierPopC March 24, 2026 3 minutes read
Starfleet Academy

Paramount+ will end Star Trek: Starfleet Academy with its second season. The decision comes shortly after the show completed its debut run. The streamer had already ordered season two, which has now finished production.

Mixed Reception and Low Viewership

The series earned an 87 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audience response was weaker, with a 51 percent score. The show also failed to break into Nielsen’s weekly top 10 streaming rankings.

A Pause in Star Trek Television

The cancellation leaves no Star Trek series currently in production. However, two completed seasons of Strange New Worlds are still set to air.

At the same time, questions remain about the future of franchise overseer Alex Kurtzman. His deal with Paramount+ runs through the end of 2026. The company is in talks with Kurtzman and his Secret Hideout production company about a possible extension. It is unclear if that agreement would continue his leadership of the Star Trek brand. Kurtzman has also produced other projects for the studio, including Hawaii Five-O, Scorpion, and Salvation.

Film Projects Still in Development

Paramount Pictures continues to develop new Star Trek films. Those projects remain in early stages.

Studio Statement on the Final Season

CBS Studios and Paramount+ addressed the cancellation in a joint statement:

“We’re incredibly proud of the ambition, passion, and creativity that went into bringing Star Trek: Starfleet Academy to life. The series introduced audiences to a bold new group of characters, welcomed familiar faces, and expanded the Star Trek universe in exciting new ways. We’re grateful to [EPs] Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau, Gaia Violo, and the entire cast and crew who pushed storytelling boundaries in the spirit of Gene Roddenberry’s vision. We look forward to sharing the upcoming second and final season with everyone, and continuing to celebrate the cast, crew, and all that was accomplished with this series.”

Producers Respond With Open Letter

Executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau, and Gaia Violo also released an open letter following the news. They confirmed that season two is now in post-production and will serve as the show’s final chapter.

“It’s been my and Noga’s joy and privilege to help carry Gene Roddenberry’s extraordinary vision forward with Starfleet Academy, thanks to the hundreds of hardworking humans who pour every ounce of their talents into the work daily with imagination and reverence. We are in post-production now on what will be the second and final season. We’re so proud of what we’ve accomplished together on this show, and the world will get to see the work of these extraordinary artists when season two airs. We will finish strong.”

The letter also addressed the deeper themes behind the franchise. The producers pointed to Roddenberry’s vision of optimism, diversity, and scientific progress, while acknowledging its warning about human conflict and responsibility.

They closed by quoting Roddenberry directly:

“Star Trek was an attempt to say that humanity will reach maturity and wisdom on the day that it begins not just to tolerate, but take a special delight in differences in ideas and differences in life forms. […] If we cannot learn to actually enjoy those small differences, to take a positive delight in those small differences between our own kind, here on this planet, then we do not deserve to go out into space and meet the diversity that is almost certainly out there.”

The producers ended their message with a familiar sign-off:

“Live Long and Prosper.”
