Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are back. The stars of the original Mummy films are reuniting for a new adventure in the blockbuster franchise. Filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known as Radio Silence, will direct the next chapter. The duo earned acclaim for Ready or Not (2019) and revitalized Scream with the 2022 and 2023 sequels. Universal Pictures, home to the original monster movies, has not commented on the project.
Producer Sean Daniel, who helped launch the series with the late James Jacks, returns. He joins William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein from Project X Entertainment. The team previously worked with Radio Silence on Abigail, Scream 5, and Scream 6.
Revisiting a Classic
The 1999 Mummy, directed by Stephen Sommers, mixed adventure, horror, and romance. Fraser played a daring treasure hunter. Weisz starred as a spirited librarian. Together, they traveled to 1920s Egypt and accidentally unleashed a cursed high priest.
The film was a global hit, earning more than $422 million. It turned Fraser into an action star and made The Mummy one of Universal’s biggest franchises. Two sequels followed: The Mummy Returns (2001) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008). Weisz appeared in the first two. Maria Bello replaced her in the third.
A Franchise with Staying Power
The series expanded with The Scorpion King, starring Dwayne Johnson, plus an animated series and a Universal Studios ride. A 2017 reboot with Tom Cruise tried to launch Universal’s “Dark Universe,” but the film flopped.
Now, Fraser and Weisz are ready to dig up the past once more. With Radio Silence behind the camera, Universal hopes to recapture the excitement that made The Mummy a fan favorite — and bring new life to a legend buried in the sands of Egypt.
