LEGO reveals a major step forward with the Smart Brick, a chip-powered element set to debut in upcoming releases. The company calls it the next chapter in its 90-year history of play.
The Smart Brick packs sensors that track light, sound, and movement. It also includes a miniature speaker and onboard synthesizer. LEGO says the technology includes more than 20 patented world firsts and supports wireless charging.
Smart Play Takes Shape
The Smart Brick anchors a new technology platform called Smart Play. LEGO also plans Smart Minifigures with similar built-in functionality. Fans will get their first hands-on experience through a new line of Smart Play-powered LEGO Star Wars sets.
“For over 90 years, the LEGO Group has sparked imagination and creativity in children around the globe,” said Julia Goldin, Chief Product and Marketing Officer. “As the world evolves, so do we. LEGO Smart Play is the next exciting chapter in our LEGO System in Play.”
How the Technology Works
Smart Play builds on ideas introduced in LEGO’s interactive Super Mario range. The Smart Brick detects interactions with Smart Figures and Smart Tags, triggering sounds, lights, and responses during play.
Star Wars Sets Lead the Launch
The first wave of Smart Play sets features LEGO Star Wars. The lineup includes the 584-piece Luke’s Red Five X-Wing priced at $99.99, the 473-piece Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter at $69.99, and the 962-piece Throne Room Duel & A-Wing set for $159.99.
The sets deliver interactive effects. Engines light up. Laser blasts and lightsabers sound off. The Throne Room set even plays The Imperial March when Emperor Palpatine takes his seat.
Pre-orders open January 9. The sets launch March 1.
