HBO Renews The Expanding ‘Game Of Thrones’ Universe

Game Of Thornes

HBO renews the “Game Of Thrones” spinoff, “House of the Dragon” for Season 4. The new season arrives in 2028. Before that, Season 3 lands in summer 2026 on HBO, Sky, and streaming service Now.

Targaryens Take Flight Again

“House of the Dragon” adapts George R. R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood” and pushes viewers 200 years before “Game of Thrones.” The series tracks House Targaryen as it rises, fractures, and fights for power long before Daenerys enters the line.

The ensemble features Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, Matthew Needham, James Norton, Tom Bennett, Kieran Bew, Kurt Egyiawan, Freddie Fox, Clinton Liberty, Gayle Rankin and Abubakar Salim.

“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” Expands Its Run

HBO also renews “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” for Season 2. The decision comes before the show’s premiere on Jan. 18, 2026. Season 2 rolls out in 2027.

The half-hour series serves as another prequel, set about 100 years before “Game of Thrones.” It adapts Martin’s “Tales of Dunk and Egg” novellas. Variety first confirmed development in 2021, and HBO ordered the series in 2023.

The story follows Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall and his young squire Egg as they travel Westeros. Peter Claffey plays Dunk, while Dexter Sol Ansell portrays Egg.

Behind the Scenes

Ryan Condal creates and runs the series. He executive produces with George R. R. Martin, Sara Hess, Melissa Bernstein, Kevin de la Noy, Vince Gerardis, David Hancock and Philippa Goslett.

“We are thrilled to be able to deliver new seasons of these two series for the next three years, for the legion of fans of the ‘Game of Thrones’ universe,” said Francesca Orsi, EVP of HBO programming and head of drama.

She says the two shows reveal how wide and imaginative Martin’s world remains. “In January, audiences will be delighted by the inspiring underdog tale of Dunk and Egg,” she said. “And this summer, ‘House of the Dragon’ is set to ignite once again with some of its most epic battles yet.”
