Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips reunite for Unfinished Tales, a new original graphic novel from Image Comics. The bestselling duo behind Reckless, The Fade Out, Kill Or Be Killed, and Criminal bring their signature noir style to a fresh story set for release this winter, just in time for the holiday season.
A Dark, Genre-Blending Thriller
The book blends psychological suspense with literary intrigue. It draws tonal inspiration from Misery and The Talented Mr. Ripley. At the same time, it aims to appeal to fans of J. R. R. Tolkien and Megan Abbott. That mix sets up an unusual but deliberate crossover between noir and epic fantasy audiences.
Inside the Story
The story follows Finnegan Blake, one of the world’s most successful authors. His bestselling novels have already been adapted into a major television series. Despite that success, Blake struggles under mounting pressure. He is ten years overdue on the final installment of his epic fantasy saga and sees no way to finish it.
Everything changes when an old friend arrives with a solution. The offer promises to break Blake’s writer’s block. It also comes at a cost. As their secret pact unfolds, tensions rise and egos collide. Blake must decide how far he is willing to go to complete his final book and secure his legacy.
Brubaker on the Story’s Dark Core
“This is one of my favorite books we’ve ever done,” Brubaker said. “I’ve always been fascinated by why people write, or in this case, why they don’t, and so I took the idea of writer’s block and ran into the darkness with it.”
He added, “Unfinished Tales is a deep dive into the world of writers and publishing, the pressure to succeed, and what that may cost you. It’s also a very fucked up thriller about egos and ambition, because it’s about writers.”
Unfinished Tales arrives first in comic shops on Wednesday, November 11. It will then reach bookstores on Tuesday, December 8.
