The Ninja Turtles will hit theaters sooner than planned. Paramount Pictures has moved up the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2 to August 13, 2027. The sequel was previously set for Sept. 17, 2027.
A Proven Hit Returns
The new film follows 2023’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which combined humor with bold animation. The approach paid off. The movie earned $181.9 million worldwide.
The Hollywood Reporter praised the first installment’s tone and style. “Adopting a decidedly younger spin toward its teenage heroes, the hugely entertaining and funny film seems destined to reinvigorate the franchise and attract plenty of nostalgic adults as well as young fans,” the review said.
Creative Team Stays in Place
Director Jeff Rowe returns for the sequel. He is joined by co-directors Kyler Spears and Yashar Kassai.
Seth Rogen produces alongside Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Josh Fagen, and Ramsay McBean.
Character details remain under wraps. Rowe has previously explained why the first film avoided franchise villain Shredder.
“Shredder is a big character when he’s on screen,” Rowe told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023. “He demands a lot of presence, and he takes up so much space in the story. So it was too much space in a movie where we’re also trying to reintroduce a new generation of Turtles and get audiences on board with this iteration.”
Rowe added that using a villain closer to the Turtles’ level helped the story click. “It helped us make the film that we ended up making.”
Paramount Expands the Turtle Universe
The date shift comes as the David Ellison-led Paramount increases its focus on the long-running property. The franchise began as an underground comic in 1984, created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman.
Paramount is also developing a live-action and CGI hybrid film inspired by its Sonic the Hedgehog movies. That project is expected in 2028.
More Turtles Beyond the Movies
The expansion goes beyond theaters. Paramount is launching the kids-focused series Teeny Mutant Ninja Turtles. The company is also entering the restaurant space. A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-themed pizza parlor is expected to open in multiple locations, including Santa Monica.
