Hulu has ordered a pilot for Southern Bastards, based on the award-winning Image Comics series by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour. The graphic novel earned both Eisner and Harvey Awards for its gritty Southern storytelling.
Creative Team
The pilot comes from writers and executive producers Bill Dubuque (Ozark, The Accountant) and Nia DaCosta (Candyman, The Marvels). Matt Olmstead (Chicago P.D., Law & Order: Organized Crime) will serve as showrunner and executive producer. The project is produced by Onyx Collective, POV Entertainment, and Proximity Media, in association with Fifth Season. Dubuque holds an overall deal with Fifth Season.
The Story
Southern Bastards takes place in Craw County, Alabama — a town ruled by football, barbecue, and blood. Earl Tubb returns home after 40 years away. He finds corruption, violence, and old scores that refuse to die. The man at the center of it all is Euless Boss, the local high school coach who controls the town with fear and power.
Earl’s had enough. Armed with a big stick and a bigger sense of justice, he sets out to clean house.
Tone and Style
The series mixes the hometown drama of Friday Night Lights with the raw edge of The Sopranos. It’s part crime story, part Southern Gothic, and all heart-pounding grit. Hulu’s adaptation promises a dark, character-driven look at power, loyalty, and revenge in small-town America.
