Project Hail Mary continues to dominate the global box office. The sci-fi hit crossed $300 million in its second weekend, becoming the top-grossing Hollywood film of 2026 so far and Amazon MGM Studios’ biggest earner, unadjusted for inflation.
Momentum Builds
In North America, the Ryan Gosling-led film dropped just 32 percent to $54.5 million from 4,007 theaters. That marks one of the strongest second-weekend holds in recent memory for a film in this opening range.
By comparison, Oppenheimer fell 43 percent in its second weekend, while Dune: Part 2 dropped 44 percent. After 10 days, Project Hail Mary has reached $164.3 million domestically.
Internationally, the film added $54.1 million from 86 markets, slipping only 5 percent. Its overseas total now stands at $136.2 million, pushing the global tally to $300.8 million.
The film opened ahead of expectations with $80.6 million domestically and $141 million worldwide in its first weekend. That marked the strongest debut of 2026 for a Hollywood release.
Story and Word of Mouth Drive Performance
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film adapts Andy Weir’s novel. Gosling plays a high school teacher and former biologist tasked with saving Earth from a dying sun.
After waking alone on a spaceship with no memory, he discovers an alien named Rocky. The two form a bond and work together to solve the crisis. Strong audience reactions and positive word of mouth continue to drive ticket sales.
Sequel Talk Gains Momentum
Industry sources say a sequel is possible. Weir has ideas for a follow-up, but no formal discussions with Amazon MGM have taken place. Still, insiders say future installments remain on the table.
Amazon MGM’s Rising Influence
The film’s success arrives at a pivotal moment. Amazon MGM is expanding its global distribution and positioning itself as a major Hollywood player.
At the same time, Skydance’s planned expansion, including its acquisition of Paramount and potential addition of Warner Bros. Discovery, signals major shifts across the industry.
Other Box Office Highlights
Pixar and Disney’s Hoppers continues its strong run. The film reached $297 million globally, making it the second-biggest Hollywood release of the year.
Domestically, it added $12.2 million in its fourth weekend. Overseas, it brought in another $24.8 million as Disney continues a staggered international rollout.
Mid-Tier Competition Heats Up
New Line and Skydance’s They Will Kill You is tracking for third place domestically with $5 million from 2,778 theaters, below early projections.
The film follows tenants in a luxury New York building who conduct ritual killings. Directed by Kirill Sokolov, it has earned mixed reviews and moderate audience response.
