Eisner Award winner Skottie Young is bringing Popeye the Sailor Man into I Hate Fairyland #45. The spinach-powered issue features guest cartoonist Jay Fosgitt (Marvel Fairy Tales, Bodie Troll) and sets sail this October from Image Comics.
“Jay is a fantastic cartoonist, and we’re lucky to have him,” said Young. “Popeye is one of his favorite characters, and he draws him brilliantly. Since Popeye just entered the public domain, it felt like the perfect time. I Hate Fairyland is the kind of book where anything can happen, so why not?”
Popeye’s debut continues Young’s run of surprising cameos from legendary characters. Past issues have brought in Dorothy and Toto from The Wizard of Oz, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, and even Steamboat Willie’s Mickey Mouse.
In this issue, Gert and Larry sail across the ocean on a mission. They’re hunting a dangerous sea beast that may hold the secret to sending Gert home. But the creature proves too powerful. That’s when they get help from none other than Popeye the Sailor Man.
I Hate Fairyland #45 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, October 15.
