Spawn: The Dark Ages is back. The long-awaited series returns this October with a six-issue miniseries from creator Liam Sharp (Wonder Woman, StarHenge). Image Comics and Todd McFarlane Productions will publish the series.
The first issue will have four covers. Two come from Sharp, one is a blank sketch variant, and one is a 1:50 incentive cover by Ryan Brown.
Sharp takes on the roles of writer, inker, and colorist. He crafts a sweeping tale of kings, gods, and the Devil’s Spawn. The story unfolds in post-Roman Britain, a land fractured and uncertain.
“Returning to Spawn: The Dark Ages after so long has been a wild and wonderful ride,” Sharp said. “I wanted something unique. Readers won’t need prior knowledge of Spawn or the Dark Ages. I set it in 5th-century Britain, when Pagan traditions were fading and Christianity was taking hold. It’s a grand melodrama with love, betrayals, and courtly intrigue, much like the Arthurian legends. King Aurelianus is at its heart, a prototype for Arthur himself.”
At the center stands Erlking Ulegrave, the Devil’s Spawn and master of the Wild Hunt. From all sides come enemies. Saxons raid from the East. Picts press from the North. Hibernians strike from the West. To save his kingdom, newly crowned King Aurelianus Ambrosius must form a dangerous pact with the Erlking. But can a Christian king trust an ancient power of darkness—or will the alliance cost him his soul?
Spawn creator Todd McFarlane shared his excitement. “As a fan of dark, gritty stories and of Liam Sharp’s work, I’ve looked forward to this for years. Decades ago, Liam impressed me with his take on Dark Ages Spawn. Now he returns to show readers how brutal, dangerous, and unforgiving the past truly was. Survival is never guaranteed.”
