The world of Fire and Ice expands this December with a new special comic focused on the villain Nekron. The classic film collaboration from Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta continues its legacy with Frank’s granddaughter, Sara Frazetta, leading the project.
“When I started writing Nekron, I rewatched Fire and Ice a few times and focused on the shadowy spaces in the plot,” said writer Sara Frazetta. “I’m the kind of person who always needs to know why, so an origin story was right up my alley. Pieces of the story came to me while walking my dogs, others in dreams—it consumed me for weeks, and I loved every moment of the process. I’m incredibly overjoyed with gratitude that Dynamite asked me to do this. Thank you to the entire team for allowing me to rediscover the pure joy of creation.”
Lord Nekron rules Icepeak with tyranny. The son of Queen Juliana, he learned dark sorcery from her, and together they plotted to kidnap Teegra. Nekron’s powerful magic lets him move glaciers, sparking a war between his lands and Firekeep. In the film, his evil brings him into conflict with both Larn and Darkwolf.
This new story reveals the twisted origin of one of fantasy’s most terrifying villains. Over 28 pages, fans will follow a cautionary tale of grief, rage, and ambition gone wrong. After witnessing her royal spouse burned alive, Queen Juliana turned her back on the gods of balance and pledged herself to the Wolf-God, Ulghir. In secret, she bled for him. In silence, she learned his teachings. In darkness, she bore two sons — one conceived in love and the other through black magic. Their births set in motion the tragic events that doom the Realms of Ice and Fire.
Artist Geof Isherwood brings Frazetta’s script to life. A legendary illustrator, painter, and writer, Isherwood is known for his work on Doctor Strange, Namor the Sub-Mariner, Suicide Squad, and The ‘Nam. He is also no stranger to swords and sorcery, having contributed to Conan the Barbarian, another franchise linked to Frank Frazetta’s legacy.
The creative team is joined by cover artists Dan Panosian, Jae Lee, and Steve E. Gordon, who deliver haunting and striking artwork.
A special fourth cover is available exclusively as part of a mystery blind bag variant. Each bag includes two exclusive copies of the issue: one Blank Authentix edition and one of five unique variant covers. Seventy percent of the bags feature the mystery fourth cover with trade dress. Others may include black-and-white line art or “virgin” versions of the three main covers.
Fire and Ice: Nekron follows a flagship comic series and a previous special focused on Teegra. Top creators such as Bill Willingham, Leonardo Manco, and Gabriele di Caro have contributed to the expanding universe of Fire and Ice.
