Dynamite Entertainment has announced a major event that brings together two of Disney’s most beloved animated worlds. The crossover comic Gargoyles/Darkwing Duck arrives this January, uniting both fan-favorite franchises under an all-star creative team.
A Legacy Born from the Disney Afternoon
In the 1990s, the Disney Afternoon block captured audiences with unforgettable heroes and adventure. Among its standout shows were Gargoyles and Darkwing Duck, both blending superhero themes with heart and humor. Each series built a devoted following and left a lasting mark on popular culture. Now, their creators are joining forces for a new comic book adventure that merges their worlds for the first time.
Magic, Mayhem, and Misunderstandings
The story begins when the villainous Demona uses a powerful magic mirror to enlist Morgana Macawber in her plan for destruction. When trouble brews, Darkwing Duck and Launchpad McQuack race to Manhattan aboard the Thunderquack. There, they encounter Goliath and Elisa, leading to an inevitable hero-versus-hero misunderstanding before the real threat becomes clear.
The Return of Two Visionary Creators
Greg Weisman, the writer and producer behind Gargoyles, brings decades of storytelling experience to this crossover. Since 2022, he has continued the saga of the stone guardians through Dynamite’s ongoing comic series, expanding the mythos and exploring new character arcs.
“When I started in development at Walt Disney Television Animation, the first show I ever worked on was Darkwing Duck, learning the gig under Tad,” said Weisman. “So nothing seems more appropriate than for Tad and I to team up to bring fans of both properties to this crossover event!”
Tad Stones, the creative mind who gave the world Darkwing Duck, brings his own legacy of Disney animation to the project. With nearly three decades at Disney, he helped shape classics like Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, Aladdin, and Hercules. This series marks his first time writing Darkwing in 15 years.
“Greg had no problem entering DW’s world since he was part of the show’s development from the start,” said Stones. “We traded notes and I even sketched out visual gags when words failed me. Working with teams of creative artists and writers has always been the best part of my career, and this crossover is a new highlight.”
A Stellar Creative Team
Joining Weisman and Stones is Disney comics veteran Ciro Cangialosi, who previously illustrated Dynamite’s Negaduck. This project gives him the chance to bring his talent to the Gargoyles’ world for the first time. Letterer Fabio Amelia completes the main creative team.
A Celebration of Two Worlds
To honor this milestone, editor Nate Cosby has assembled an exceptional lineup of cover artists. Ivan Bigarella, known for his work on DuckTales, brings his signature style. Clayton Henry adds his superheroic flair. Declan Shalvey, one of Dynamite’s breakout stars, contributes his own striking vision. Both Tad Stones and Ciro Cangialosi will also provide variant covers.
The collision of Gargoyles and Darkwing Duck marks a historic moment in Disney comics history—a celebration of legacy, creativity, and the enduring power of two timeless heroes.
