Scott Dunbier’s Act 4 Publishing, in partnership with Skybound and Image Comics, is bringing J. Scott Campbell’s Danger Girl Artist’s Edition to retail in 2027. The oversized collection presents J. Scott Campbell’s artwork from the influential series in the Artist’s Edition format and will be available in comic shops on June 2, 2027.
From Kickstarter Success to Retail Release
The project arrives at retail after becoming one of the most funded comic book Kickstarter campaigns of 2025. More than 1,500 backers pledged over $537,000 to the campaign, which was led by Act 4 founder Scott Dunbier.
Dunbier has a long history with the property. He served as editor on Danger Girl during its original run and returned to work with Campbell on the new Artist’s Edition.
The hardcover runs more than 200 pages and measures 12 by 17 inches. It includes pages from the original Danger Girl miniseries, covers from other Danger Girl books, two foldouts, and two tri-foldouts.
The collection also features rare sketches, page breakdowns, and other material showcasing Campbell’s creative process. Together, the material offers collectors an extensive look at the artwork behind the series.
“The overwhelming outpouring of fan support for our Danger Girl Artist’s Edition Kickstarter was incredible and made this impressive volume possible,” said J. Scott Campbell. “Now I’m thrilled to have it printed again as a retail edition, so even more collectors and comic art appreciators can enjoy what we were so proud to create.”
Campbell Looks Back at the Creative Process
The volume includes an introduction featuring commentary from Campbell. His remarks provide additional insight into the techniques and creative decisions behind the artwork.
The book also examines the artistic legacy of Danger Girl and Campbell’s work on the title. The series helped establish Campbell as one of the comic industry’s most recognizable artists.
Danger Girl debuted in 1998 and introduced readers to Abbey Chase and an elite team of secret agents. Campbell built their adventures around international intrigue, action, and globe-spanning missions.
The series quickly became a top-selling comic and a major success. Its popularity further established Campbell’s reputation within the industry.
“As the original editor of Danger Girl, it’s a thrill for me to work with J. Scott on this Artist’s Edition,” said Scott Dunbier. “Danger Girl is very special to both of us, and we’re incredibly happy with the way this book turned out – we really pulled out all the stops on it!”
Preserving Campbell’s Original Artwork
Although the finished artwork appears in black and white, each page in the Artist’s Edition was scanned in full color directly from Campbell’s original art. The process preserves details including blue pencil marks, ink gradients, corrections, and other characteristics of the original pages.
The artwork is also reproduced at the same size Campbell originally drew it. That presentation gives readers an experience designed to closely replicate viewing the original art in person.
For collectors who do not have access to Campbell’s original pages, the Artist’s Edition offers a detailed reproduction of the work. The format emphasizes the physical qualities and working details often lost in traditionally printed comics.
Act 4 and Skybound Expand Their Artist’s Edition Line
J. Scott Campbell’s Danger Girl Artist’s Edition continues the publishing partnership between Act 4 Publishing and Skybound. The companies are also developing several additional Artist’s Edition projects.
Upcoming releases include Jason Pearson’s Body Bags Artist’s Edition and DC Silver Age Covers and Stories Artist’s Edition. The lineup also features Beta Ray Bill by Daniel Warren Johnson Artist’s Edition and Circus of Bones: The Art of Mike Mignola.
J. Scott Campbell’s Danger Girl Artist’s Edition arrives in comic book shops on June 2, 2027. The book will then reach bookstores everywhere on Tuesday, June 29, 2027.
