Skybound Entertainment, in partnership with Universal Products & Experiences, will release a remastered edition of Universal Monsters: Creature From the Black Lagoon Lives! #1 (of 2). The limited comic comes from writers Dan Watters (Batman: Dark Patterns, Destro) and Ram V (The Many Deaths of Laila Starr, Batman: Detective Comics), with art by Matthew Roberts (Manifest Destiny).
The new edition presents the first two issues in remastered black-and-white format, giving the creators’ work a stark, atmospheric look.
A New Story Set After the 1954 Film
Originally published as a four-issue limited series, the story takes place years after the 1954 Universal Pictures classic. Journalist Kate Marsden travels deep into the Amazon while tracking a notorious serial killer.
Her investigation leads to a dangerous encounter with an unexpected presence. She must determine whether the creature she meets is an ally, an enemy, or something beyond both. The answer may be the legendary Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Creative Team Reflects on the Return
“After the massive success of our Dracula Black & White Special, we’re thrilled to return to the Black Lagoon!” said Alex Antone, Editorial Director at Skybound. “Dan Watters and Ram V delivered an incredible crime story that fans never saw coming, and Matthew Roberts’ stunning art may look even better in black & white.”
Expanding the Universal Monsters Comic Line
Alongside the Gill-Man, the series introduces journalist Kate Marsden and serial killer Darwin Collier. It also features the return of Dr. Edwin Thompson from the original film.
The title is part of Skybound and Universal Products & Experiences’ growing Universal Monsters comic line. Previous and companion releases include the Eisner Award-nominated Universal Monsters: Dracula by James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds, as well as Michael Walsh’s Frankenstein, Faith Erin Hicks’ The Mummy, and James Tynion IV and DANI’s The Invisible Man. The line will continue with Universal Monsters: Phantom of the Opera by Tyler Boss and Martin Simmonds.
Each project pairs leading creators with a classic horror icon, delivering new standalone stories for longtime fans and new readers.
Universal Monsters: Creature From the Black Lagoon Lives! Black & White Special #1 arrives at comic shops and digital platforms on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
