Disney claimed the top spot over Super Bowl weekend as 20th Century’s Send Help held first place in its second frame. The film earned $10 million domestically despite a crowded slate of indie releases, competition from the NFL championship game, and frigid weather across the East Coast.
Directed by Sam Raimi, the darkly comic horror thriller stars Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien as co-workers stranded on a desert island. The $40 million production has earned $35.8 million domestically after 10 days. It has added $17.9 million overseas for a global total of $53.7 million against its net budget before marketing.
Disney’s Global Box Office Milestones
The studio also scored major international milestones. The Oscar-nominated Zootopia 2 now ranks as the fifth highest-grossing Hollywood title of all time overseas after surpassing Avengers: Infinity War at $1.374 billion.
Meanwhile, Avatar: Fire & Ash moved to No. 11 on the same international chart after edging past Inside Out 2, which grossed $1.046 billion. Zootopia 2 had already reached No. 8 on the list of top global releases of all time, not adjusted for inflation.
Solo Mio Opens in Second
Angel Studios’ romantic comedy Solo Mio, starring Kevin James, debuted in second place with $7.2 million. The feel-good title led the weekend’s new releases but could not unseat Send Help.
Iron Lung Scores Strong Second Weekend
Indie horror hit Iron Lung placed third with $6 million in its sophomore outing, despite a steep 67 percent drop. The film has reached $31 million domestically after 10 days.
Created by Mark Fischbach, known online as Markiplier, the self-distributed project reportedly cost $3 million. Fischbach directed the film in his feature debut. The movie is based on the submarine simulation horror game developed and published by David Szymanski, who also contributed to the screenplay and appears in a cameo.
K-Pop Concert Film Debuts in Fourth
Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience launched in fourth place with an estimated $5.7 million domestically. Bleecker Street and Crosswalk handled U.S. distribution for the Live Nation production.
The concert film blends footage from the group’s Los Angeles show at SoFi Stadium with behind-the-scenes material. Internationally, Universal is distributing the title. It earned $5.6 million overseas for an early worldwide total of $18.8 million against a modest budget.
Dracula Rounds Out the Top Five
Vertical’s Luc Besson-directed Dracula opened in fifth place with $4.5 million. The result marks the strongest performance to date for the emerging distributor.
