The Super Mario Galaxy Movie delivered a powerful second weekend, crossing major box office milestones with ease. The Illumination and Universal sequel has now topped $300 million domestically and $600 million globally.
The film held the No. 1 spot in North America, earning $69 million over the weekend. That marks a modest 48 percent drop, bringing its domestic total to $308.1 million through Sunday.
Internationally, the film added $84 million across 88 markets. Its overseas total now stands at $321.1 million, pushing the global haul to $628.8 million. It is currently the top-grossing Hollywood release of the year and continues to set the pace for 2026.
‘Project Hail Mary’ Crosses $500M Globally
Project Hail Mary remains a major player in its fourth weekend. The Amazon MGM Studios release has now surpassed $500 million worldwide.
Based on Andy Weir’s best-selling novel, the story follows a high school teacher unexpectedly sent into space to save the sun. During the mission, he forms an unlikely bond with an alien companion he names Rocky.
The Ryan Gosling-led film brought in $24.5 million domestically, a 33 percent decline, for a North American total of $256.7 million. Overseas, it added $30.6 million, lifting its international total to $254 million and global earnings to $510.6 million.
Early concerns over the film’s $195 million production budget have faded. Under the leadership of Courtenay Valenti, Amazon MGM’s gamble has paid off as the film continues to draw strong audiences.
2026 Box Office Sees Strong Growth
The success of both films is fueling a broader box office rebound. According to Comscore, domestic revenue reached $2.113 billion by April 8. That represents a 23.5 percent increase over the same period in 2025.
The April 10–12 weekend did see a year-over-year dip. A tough comparison against the prior year’s breakout hit, A Minecraft Movie, contributed to the slowdown. Even so, 2026 remains ahead of last year by more than 23 percent, signaling sustained momentum for the theatrical market.
