The multiverse is reopening. Rick and Morty returns with a new batch of episodes that Adult Swim promises will rank among the show’s best. Season nine premieres Sunday, May 24.
Adult Swim leadership says the creative team continues to push the series forward with bold ideas and sharp storytelling.
Adult Swim Promises A Standout Season
Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim, praised the team behind the hit animated comedy and its continued momentum.
“I know it’s my job to say that this show just keeps topping itself, but it also has the benefit of being true,” Ouweleen said. “It’s kind of scary what this show unit is doing season over season. They pour an absurd amount of talent and brilliance into these episodes. From the first frame, you’re going to see great high concept insanity with some of the best character writing ever done. Again, it’s my job to say that, but it’s also true.”
A Playful Official Description
Adult Swim’s official season description keeps the show’s signature irreverent tone front and center.
“Rick and Morty is back, baby! Season Nine is all certified bangers. No AI slop! Just Grade A organic slop, made by real humans with real human traits like back hair and cysts. Please watch, or we’ll have neglected our families for nothing.”
Responding to Fan Expectations
The new season arrives after some fans felt season eight fell slightly short of the series’ usual high bar.
Showrunner and executive producer Scott Marder addressed those concerns during a Reddit AMA.
“I would say Season 9 will convince everyone we’ve got a full tank of gas left in us,” Marder said. “The episode ideas are still REALLY flowing, and Rick still has plenty of mean left in him.”
A Proven Comedy Powerhouse
Since its debut, Rick and Morty has remained one of Adult Swim’s most successful shows. The series has ranked as the top comedy on basic cable during multiple seasons.
It has also earned two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program, cementing its place as one of television’s most influential animated comedies.
