Bestselling co-writers Mark Elijah Rosenberg (Approaching the Unknown, Year Million) and Matthew Rosenberg (We’re Taking Everyone Down With Us, 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank) join forces for a new sci-fi adventure at Image Comics. The series, titled If Destruction Be Our Lot, launches in May as an ongoing title.
They are joined by artist Andy Macdonald (Doctor Strange, Wonder Woman), colorist Francesco Segala, and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. Together the team promises a fast-paced and imaginative science fiction story.
The debut issue will also feature variant covers from several acclaimed artists. Contributors include Jerome Opeña, James Harren, Tradd Moore, and additional guest creators.
A World Without Humans
If Destruction Be Our Lot takes place in a future where humanity has vanished. The only inhabitants left behind are the robots once built to serve them.
Most of the machines are content with their routines. They continue their daily work without human oversight and without complaint.
One robot does not share that contentment.
A Robot Named Abe
Abe is a robotic replicant of Abraham Lincoln. Unlike the other machines, he searches for purpose beyond the endless cycle of work.
He believes something meaningful exists beyond the city’s borders. After a near-fatal encounter, Abe sets out to explore the wider world. He plans to keep traveling until he finds answers or gets recycled trying.
Creators on the Series
“As someone coming into comics from the film industry, I’ve been dazzled by the creative possibilities,” Mark Rosenberg told IGN in exclusive coverage. “And we’re making something that feels important to us because it deals with real issues through a totally bizarre metaphor, but in the end it’s all about the search for one primal, universal thing: friendship. Even if it’s only with a talking toaster.”
Matthew Rosenberg said the project has grown far beyond its original idea.
“This is a story I’ve wanted to tell for a long time,” Rosenberg explained. “But working on it for the last few years it has really become something so much bigger, funnier, sadder, weirder, and more hopeful than I ever could have dreamt. And getting to make it with two of my favorite old collaborators, Andy, and Hassan, one of my favorite new collaborators, Francesco, and my favorite brother, Mark, has been one of the highlights of my career.”
Artist Andy Macdonald sees the story as both timely and playful.
“My hatred of A.I. is matched only by my love for weird little robots,” Macdonald said. “So getting to make a comic about a weird guy looking for meaning in a world that has left him behind is both prescient and incredibly fun. I can’t wait for people to enter our world of lonely robots.”
If Destruction Be Our Lot #1 arrives at comic book shops and digital platforms on Wednesday, May 6.
