Oni Press and Magnetic Press have launched a new Kickstarter campaign for Worlds Between Worlds. The project features two stand-alone graphic novels by internationally acclaimed animator and artist Jonathan Djob Nkondo.
Nkondo is known for his work on Scavengers Reign, League of Legends, Love, Death & Robots, and several animated shorts for FXX and MTV.
The campaign includes two introspective science fiction works. The books are titled Peaceful Remission and Wandering. Fans can support both graphic novels now through Kickstarter.
From Animation to Graphic Novels
In 2025, the animated series Scavengers Reign premiered on HBO and earned strong critical praise. The show drew attention for its eerie world-building and striking visual design.
Jonathan Djob Nkondo played a key role in shaping that atmosphere. He worked as an animator, storyboard artist, director, and designer on the series.
His style stands out for its clean, fluid linework and quiet pacing. Many of his stories explore the unspoken emotional lives of characters.
The Worlds Between Worlds campaign now brings Nkondo’s personal comics work to U.S. readers.
Magnetic Press Director of Publishing Mike Kennedy highlighted the importance of the project.
“Whether you discovered Jonathan Nkondo’s work through his illustrations, his animation, or the haunting series Scavengers Reign, this collection is your chance to own the definitive editions of his most personal works,” Kennedy said.
Inside Peaceful Remission
Peaceful Remission unfolds in a sleek satellite home orbiting Earth. The story centers on elderly couple Marlène and Jerry Nomo.
Their quiet routine breaks when a mysterious rumble shakes their home at night. The noise sparks tension that has been building for years.
Marlène grows frustrated with Jerry’s passivity. Jerry becomes consumed by a recent discovery that shifts the balance of their relationship.
Marlène now carries the responsibility for Jerry’s health and daily care. Routine tasks such as shopping, driving, and caregiving take on deeper emotional weight.
Nkondo frames the story through sterile futuristic interiors and intimate character moments. The narrative blends dialogue with silent observation.
The result is a contemplative look at long relationships, quiet devotion, and emotional distance.
A Silent Journey in Wandering
Wandering moves to a stark and unusual future. Earth’s surface has become a vast desert. Strange geometric creatures roam across the barren landscape.
Human society has retreated underground.
Life continues in sprawling subterranean complexes filled with theaters, malls, food courts, and highways. The underground world mirrors the structure of modern cities while creating a claustrophobic environment.
The story follows two men living in separate worlds. One travels across the empty wasteland above. The other navigates the dense urban maze below the surface.
The two characters never meet. Yet their lives reflect each other in surprising ways.
The graphic novel tells its story without dialogue. Nkondo builds meaning through atmosphere, visual rhythm, and parallel lives.
Themes of alienation, routine, freedom, and modern life shape the narrative.
A Distinctly Handcrafted Style
Kennedy says Nkondo’s artwork stands apart because of its handmade quality.
“Nkondo’s work carries a distinctly hand-made sensibility, rooted in the tactile precision of an artist who draws every frame with intention,” Kennedy explained.
“Lines feel alive. They carry the subtle variations that come from real tools moving across real surfaces. Even when his work explores surreal or futuristic worlds, that handcrafted quality gives the art warmth and intimacy.”
He added that the approach creates work that feels both carefully crafted and deeply personal.
Special Editions for Collectors
Both Peaceful Remission and Wandering will arrive as unique hardcover editions.
Each book features exposed binding and a color cardstock sleeve. The design gives the books the feel of a discovered artifact while reflecting the futuristic themes of the stories.
The 6.5 by 9 inch graphic novels are presented in greyscale.
Backers can also secure a limited edition boxed set. The package includes an illustrated slipcase, a signed and numbered bookplate, and a 48-page softcover art book by Nkondo.
