Dynamite Entertainment is returning to Agrabah with a brand new Aladdin comic series set to launch this May. The project expands the publisher’s growing line of licensed Disney classics and brings the beloved characters from the 1992 animated film back to comics.
Writer James III and artist Agnese Eterno lead the creative team behind the new series. Together, they aim to deliver fresh adventures inspired by one of the most celebrated films of the Disney Renaissance era.
A New Adventure in Agrabah
The story begins with Aladdin enjoying life at the top of the world. The former street rat now stands beside Princess Jasmine, the love of his life. His loyal monkey Abu and the magical flying carpet remain close by. Meanwhile, Genie has gained his freedom and can finally live life outside the lamp.
But peace never lasts long in Agrabah.
Trouble soon finds Aladdin once again. He must rely on his friends and allies to protect himself and the city he calls home.
James III Brings a Personal Connection
Writer James III brings both professional experience and personal passion to the project. The writer, comedian, and podcaster previously worked on Good Burger 2, The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish, and All That. He also wrote Dynamite’s recent Stitch series.
For James, Aladdin carries strong childhood memories.
“Writing Aladdin is an opportunity I don’t take lightly,” James III said. “Not to be old, but the Aladdin VHS was one of the few tapes we owned growing up and we wore it out. I’d run around the house imitating Genie and Iago, for which I later won the third grade talent show, thank you very much. And my light up Jafar staff was a prized possession. We’re doing our best to capture the flare of the original while telling new stories for today’s audience.”
Rising Artist Agnese Eterno Joins the Series
Italian artist Agnese Eterno illustrates the new series. Eterno trained with the acclaimed Arancia Studio, the creative hub founded by artist Mirka Andolfo.
Her work brings a vibrant visual style to the streets, palaces, and deserts of Agrabah as the series introduces new adventures for the classic characters.
All-Star Cover Lineup
The debut issue also features a strong lineup of cover artists.
J. Scott Campbell highlights the sinister presence of the villain Jafar in one of the main covers. Additional covers come from Nicoletta Baldari and Natacha Bustos. Eterno also contributes a playful cartoon head variant.
Collectors and artists can also choose a Blank Authentix edition designed for custom sketches at conventions.
Dynamite will also release the first issue as a premium mystery blind bag. The special packaging features the design of Genie’s lamp and includes three randomly selected limited-edition covers exclusive to the release.
A Classic Story Returns to Comics
Disney’s Aladdin premiered in theaters in 1992 and quickly became a global hit. The film introduced audiences to the street-smart hero Aladdin, Princess Jasmine, the villainous Jafar, and the wise-cracking Genie. Characters such as Abu and the magical carpet also became fan favorites.
At the time of its release, the film became the highest-grossing animated movie ever. Its story drew inspiration from the tales of One Thousand and One Nights.
Now Dynamite’s new comic series invites readers to return to Agrabah for a fresh round of adventures in the world of Aladdin.
