‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Opens To Historic $927 Million

Spider-Man Brand New Day

Spider-Man: Brand New Day received a massive welcome during its opening weekend. The Sony Pictures superhero feature, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, launched with one of the biggest box office performances in history.

The movie earned an estimated $355 million from 4,487 North American theaters. That total gives it the second-biggest domestic opening of all time.

Analysts watched the numbers closely throughout the weekend as Brand New Day challenged Avengers: Endgame for the record. Endgame ultimately held on to the top spot with the $357.1 million it earned in April 2019.

The final rankings could still change. Sony is projecting $84 million for Sunday, and stronger results could push Brand New Day past Endgame.

A $927 Million Global Launch

International audiences added another $572 million from 66 markets. That brings the movie’s estimated worldwide opening to $927 million.

The result ranks as the second-largest global debut ever. Only Avengers: Endgame, which opened with $1.2 billion worldwide, has earned more.

Brand New Day also delivered Sony Pictures’ biggest opening weekend. The movie broke several major records as audiences filled theaters around the world.

Preview and Opening-Day Records Fall

The film earned $72 million from domestic Thursday previews. That total surpassed the previous preview record of $60 million set by Avengers: Endgame.

Brand New Day followed with a record-setting $168 million on Friday. It topped the $156.7 million opening-day total earned by Endgame.

Saturday brought another $101.5 million. That ranks as the second-biggest Saturday total in domestic box office history.

“To be truly honest, it feels fantastic,” Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman told The Hollywood Reporter. He credited the movie’s quality, its emotional themes and the long break between Holland’s Spider-Man films.

“You’ve just got to make a really, really great film. Now, there are other more mechanical factors. There hasn’t been one in five years, so scarcity has value. The audience is very, very connected with this character. It’s a very relatable story. No matter how old or young you are, everybody wants connection in the world. Everybody needs friends. And that’s what the movie is about.”

Passing ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Holland last led a Spider-Man feature in Spider-Man: No Way Home. That movie opened with $260.1 million domestically and $587.2 million worldwide in December 2021.

No Way Home previously held the position of the second-biggest domestic opening weekend ever. Brand New Day has now moved ahead of it.

The 2021 film finished its theatrical run with $1.9 billion worldwide. It remains the eighth-highest-grossing movie of all time.

Many analysts viewed that performance as difficult to match. No Way Home featured high-profile appearances from former Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, while also benefiting from limited theatrical competition following the COVID pandemic.

Projections Fall Far Below the Final Results

Sony initially projected a domestic opening of $195 million and a worldwide launch of $465 million. Those numbers still would have placed the film among the 10 biggest openings ever.

Instead, Brand New Day nearly doubled the studio’s global projection. The film carries a $225 million production budget and comes from Marvel Studios and producer Amy Pascal.

The opening-weekend audience skewed young and male. Viewers between the ages of 18 and 24 accounted for 36 percent of ticket buyers, while men made up 61 percent of the audience.

Marvel Answers Superhero Fatigue Concerns

The record-setting launch follows renewed debate about audience fatigue with franchise movies, particularly superhero films. DC Studios’ Supergirl underperformed earlier this summer, adding to concerns about the genre’s theatrical strength.

Several recent Marvel releases also fell short of high box office expectations. Those titles included 2025’s Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*.*

Brand New Day gives Marvel Studios a major box office boost. The studio is now responsible for the four biggest domestic openings in history, with 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War holding the fourth position.

The performance also creates momentum for Disney’s Avengers: Doomsday. The star-packed Marvel feature will arrive in theaters this December.

Like Brand New Day, Avengers: Doomsday will not play in Imax theaters. That limitation did little to slow Spider-Man’s opening-weekend performance.

“This remarkable opening reinforces that moviegoers are hungry for stories that are both spectacular and deeply human, and we’re thrilled to see that resonate on such a global scale,” Pascal said in a statement to THR. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also celebrated the film’s “phenomenal opening,” which he said “sets up exciting things to come.”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has now earned more than $33.3 billion worldwide. The franchise has reached that total across 38 movies.

Strong Reviews and Audience Reactions

Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo join Holland and Zendaya in the cast. Destin Daniel Cretton, the filmmaker behind Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, directed the movie.

The story follows Marvel Comics’ signature hero as he lives without his loved ones. His lonely existence changes when an invisible enemy begins tracking him.

Critics and moviegoers have responded enthusiastically. Brand New Day holds a 90 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 98 percent audience score.

The movie also earned an A CinemaScore from audiences. In his review for THR, chief film critic David Rooney praised “a never-better Tom Holland.”

The Biggest Domestic Weekend Ever

The combined domestic box office is expected to reach $430 million for the weekend. That would make it the biggest overall weekend in North American box office history.

The previous record belongs to the opening weekend of Avengers: Endgame, when all movies combined earned $402.1 million. The 2026 domestic box office is now running 15.2 percent ahead of the same point last year.

“Moviegoers across generations made this weekend one for the record books,” Cinema United president and CEO Michael O’Leary said in a statement. The performance gave theater owners a major boost during the summer season.

‘The Odyssey’ Drops to Second Place

Universal’s The Odyssey moved into second place after leading the box office for two weekends. Christopher Nolan’s mythological epic earned another $51 million.

The film has now collected $395.5 million domestically. Studios avoided releasing major titles last weekend, preventing their films from landing between the large openings of The Odyssey and Brand New Day.

Universal also crossed $4 billion at the 2026 box office on Sunday. It became the first studio to reach that mark this year after Disney became the first to pass $3 billion.

Animated Films and ‘Moana’ Complete the Top Five

Pixar’s Toy Story 5 landed in third place with approximately $6.2 million. The animated sequel has now earned $461 million domestically.

Illumination’s Minions & Monsters followed with $5.8 million. Its domestic total has reached $168.4 million.

Disney’s live-action Moana completed the top five with $5.3 million. The remake, led by Dwayne Johnson, has earned $114.8 million domestically.

The top 12 movies of the weekend, as of Sunday, August 2, are as follows.
