Oni Press is bringing Bryan Lee O’Malley back to Scott Pilgrim for the first time since the bestselling series concluded. The publisher announced Scott Pilgrim EX: Dawn of Metal Scott #1, a new one-shot comic that serves as a prequel to the Scott Pilgrim EX video game.
The issue will feature a cover by O’Malley and introduce antagonist Metal Scott in a complete 16-page story. It will also include never-before-seen extras and a look at O’Malley’s creative process when it arrives in stores on November 11.
Bryan Lee O’Malley Returns After 16 Years
The project marks O’Malley’s first new Scott Pilgrim comic in 16 years. He originally created the story as a minicomic tied to the Scott Pilgrim EX video game.
“When I was asked to create a minicomic for SCOTT PILGRIM EX, I quickly said yes without considering the implications,” said Bryan Lee O’Malley. “Only when I started writing and drawing it did I realize this would be the first new Scott Pilgrim comic in 16 years. It’s only a trifle, but returning to Scott’s Toronto really did feel like coming home.”
The new story returns readers to a world that has changed since Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers first met. Their battles with Ramona’s Seven Evil Exes may be over, but another threat is preparing to emerge.
A New Threat Comes to Scott and Ramona
Scott met Ramona, sparks flew, and the pair eventually worked together to defeat Ramona’s Seven Evil Exes and their leader, Gideon Gordon Graves. Other events have unfolded across different media, though their place in the official canon may remain open to interpretation.
Scott and Ramona are now a happy couple, while the Exes have moved beyond their unhealthy obsessions. After a period of peace, however, a new danger is about to enter their lives.
That threat comes in the form of Metal Scott. Dawn of Metal Scott will give readers their first full introduction to the new antagonist before the events of Scott Pilgrim EX.
Scott Pilgrim Became a Multimedia Success
O’Malley launched Scott Pilgrim in 2004 with Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life. The Eisner Award-winning and New York Times bestselling series grew into one of the most successful and influential graphic novel properties of the 21st century.
The six-volume series follows 19-year-old Toronto native Scott Pilgrim after he meets Ramona Flowers, the literal girl of his dreams. Their relationship becomes considerably more complicated when Scott learns he must battle Ramona’s seven evil exes.
The success of the graphic novels led to the 2010 feature film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Edgar Wright directed the adaptation, which starred Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Brie Larson, Chris Evans, and others.
The franchise expanded again in 2023 with Scott Pilgrim Takes Off! The award-winning Netflix anime reunited the entire original cast of the feature film.
Scott Pilgrim EX: Dawn of Metal Scott #1 will arrive in stores on November 11. The one-shot will give fans a new Scott Pilgrim story while setting the stage for the Scott Pilgrim EX video game.
