A Dark New Chapter Begins In G.I. Joe

G.I. JOE

Skybound Entertainment, Image Comics, and Hasbro have unveiled the next explosive chapter in the Energon Universe’s G.I. JOE series.

Writer Joshua Williamson, artist Andrea Milana, colorist Lee Loughridge, and letterer Rus Wooton launch a twisted new three-issue arc starting with G.I. JOE #22. The issue hits comic shops May 20, 2026 and sets the stage for the game-changing 25th installment arriving this summer.

Aftermath of DREADNOK WAR

The fallout from DREADNOK WAR sends both the Joes and Cobra into a global race for Energon.

But a new threat emerges.

Crystal Ball makes his first appearance in the Energon Universe. He has his own plans and dangerous D.I.R.E. tricks ready to deploy. At the same time, the secret origin of G.I. Joe’s most unpredictable member, Risk, comes to light.

Everything builds toward a pivotal moment. When Baroness and Destro meet again, the future of both factions shifts in ways that will echo across the Energon Universe.

A Turn Toward Horror

Williamson says the new arc pushes the series into darker territory.

“One of the things I’ve loved about working in the Energon Universe is that we’ve created a world that lets us explore the G.I. JOE mythology using different genres. And with these three issues we’re taking the team into a horror story,” Williamson said. “We used some of those tools in the Cobra Commander mini-series two years ago, so it’s awesome that we’re revisiting that kind of story with Andrea Milana again! Be ready for some action-packed horror! Lots of surprises as these issues help set up the next massive storyline that hits the Energon Universe.”

Executive Editor Ben Abernathy promises big developments ahead.

“This action-packed arc has it all. Adventure. Horror. A new villain. And the origin of Risk,” Abernathy said. “We have a lot of pieces coming into alignment as we build toward our epic 25th issue!”

The three-issue storyline spans G.I. JOE #22 through #24.

Main covers come from Tom Reilly. Open-to-order variants are provided by Joshua Cassara and Romulo Fajardo Jr., as well as Ben Oliver. Incentive variants include a 1:25 cover by Tonči Zonjić and a 1:50 variant by Andrea Milana.

With horror in the mix and long-running threads converging, G.I. JOE is heading toward one of its biggest turning points yet.
