Oni Press has released a striking new set of covers for Fort Psycho, its upcoming 12-issue maxi-series from Matt Kindtand Brian Hurtt.
The covers come from acclaimed illustrator Lewis LaRosa, marking his return to regular cover work after several years. The project also serves as his first new collaboration with Oni Press.
The publisher also offered a preview of LaRosa’s new art book, Carbon Based: The Art of Lewis LaRosa, available now.
LaRosa Reflects on Career and New Work
LaRosa called the retrospective a milestone moment.
“What a tremendous honor to have a career retrospective of my work,” he said. “It’s quite a ride to look back and see where you started and how you grew and evolved over the years with the opportunities you had. I believe my best work is still ahead of me, and I mean to bring my brutal best to Matt Kindt and Brian Hurtt’s brilliant Fort Psycho. With Carbon Based, my greatest hope is that it gives anyone who flips through it the sudden urge to pick up a pencil and draw.”
Fort Psycho Launches This August
Fort Psycho #1 arrives in August as the first chapter of a 12-issue run. LaRosa joins co-creator and interior artist Hurtt on ongoing cover duties.
The series follows a team of disgraced secret agents sent to a classified island prison. As the story unfolds, buried secrets and betrayals begin to surface.
LaRosa’s black-and-white artwork will also appear as incentive covers throughout the series.
A Career Spanning Retrospective
Carbon Based: The Art of Lewis LaRosa spans more than 250 pages. It highlights LaRosa’s detailed line work, character designs, and concept art across major publishers and studios.
The collection includes work from Marvel Comics, Valiant Entertainment, Epic Games, BOOM! Studios, and Hasbro. Featured series include Bloodshot Reborn, Divinity, Punisher MAX, Savage, and Transformers.
The book features an introduction by Oni Press president and publisher Hunter Gorinson. It also includes commentary from LaRosa and former Valiant editor-in-chief Warren Simons, along with tributes from industry figures such as Lee Bermejo, Dave Johnson, Matt Kindt, Jeff Lemire, and Yanick Paquette.
Free Comic Book Day Preview and Expanded Universe
Fans will get an early look at Fort Psycho during Free Comic Book Day 2026. A special release introduces characters SHIV, LYCAN, and DRAGONFLY in the Mind MGMT / Fort Psycho FCBD 2026 Special.
The issue features two original short stories, including a prelude to Fort Psycho #1 from Kindt and Hurtt.
The release also ties into Mind MGMT: New & Improved #1, a new chapter in Kindt’s series. The title has been described by Entertainment Weekly as “one of the most experimental and fascinating books in mainstream comics.”
Mind MGMT: New & Improved #1 arrives in June, ahead of Fort Psycho’s August debut.
