Dungeons & Dragons Launches Universes Beyond

Dungeons and Dragons

Wizards of the Coast has announced a Universes Beyond initiative for Dungeons & Dragons. The program will bring licensed worlds into the tabletop role-playing game through official D&D Gameplay Expansions.

The company previously found success with the Universes Beyond licensing initiative for Magic: The Gathering. The new D&D version will allow players to explore familiar characters, locations, and settings from major entertainment franchises.

World of Warcraft Leads the Expansion

World of Warcraft will become the first licensed property featured in the initiative. The D&D: World of Warcraft Gameplay Expansion will arrive in stores on November 17, 2026.

Players will be able to create a new World of Warcraft character or recreate their main character from the video game. They can then use that character to explore dungeons and zones associated with the franchise.

“With Universes Beyond we are expanding Dungeons & Dragons into even more worlds we love, like World of Warcraft,” said Dan Ayoub, Head of Dungeons & Dragons Franchise at Wizards of the Coast. “What’s more, in a crossover that fans have dreamed about for years, Star Wars is coming to D&D for the first time, bringing the iconic galaxy to our players’ tabletops. Our wide range of announcements show that we are committed to delivering more choices, and more ways for friends and family to adventure together.”

Star Wars Comes to Dungeons & Dragons

The D&D: Star Wars Gameplay Expansion is scheduled for release in early 2027. Wizards of the Coast plans to reveal more information as the product moves closer to launch.

The expansion will mark the first time Star Wars has officially entered Dungeons & Dragons. It will bring the franchise’s galaxy to the tabletop through the D&D game system.

Classic D&D Settings Return

Wizards of the Coast also announced new expansions based on Dark Sun and Greyhawk. Both products are scheduled for release in 2027.

The company also provided more details about its plans to work with prominent D&D creators. Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman will contribute to a new Dragonlance product, while Luke Gygax will continue working with Wizards of the Coast on Greyhawk.
