Disney’s Robin Hood Returns To Comics In New Dynamite Series

Robin Hood

Disney’s legendary outlaw is heading back to Sherwood Forest for a brand-new adventure. Dynamite Entertainment will launch a new Robin Hood comic series this November, marking the character’s first major American comic book series in more than 50 years.

Eisner-nominated writer Nate Cosby (Cheetara: Worldbreaker) will script the series. Cosby and Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman will handle the plotting, while Alessandro Ranaldi (Zootopia, Disney Villains: Hades) provides the artwork.

The True Tales of Sherwood Forest

Countless legends and tall tales have tried to explain the mysterious Robin Hood. Now, readers will discover how the story supposedly unfolded in the animal kingdom’s version of Sherwood Forest.

Cosby, Weisman, and Ranaldi will reveal a collection of never-before-told-but-totally-true stories about history’s most famous archer. The series will build an interconnected adventure while exploring different characters throughout Robin Hood’s world.

Each issue will place a different character in the spotlight. Robin Hood, Maid Marian, Prince John, Friar Tuck, Lady Kluck, Alan-A-Dale, and other familiar faces will all play key roles as the larger story unfolds.

Robin Hood Takes on Prince John

The adventure begins when Robin Hood repeatedly breaks into Prince John’s castle. He does it every single day for an entire week, creating plenty of trouble along the way.

There is just one problem for Prince John. It takes him some time to figure out exactly what Robin has been stealing.

Once Prince John discovers what is missing, the hunt begins. Robin will need every bit of his skill, courage, and ingenuity to escape what follows.

Nate Cosby Celebrates Disney’s Famous Outlaw

Cosby said the appeal of Robin Hood comes from the character’s confidence, charm, and determination to fight for others. He also wants the comic to showcase the personality and atmosphere that made Disney’s version so memorable.

“Robin Hood is SO cool…who the heck wouldn’t want to be a dashing, swaggering, smiling thief on the side of good?,” said writer Nate Cosby. “We’re gonna show old fans and new readers what makes Robin and his world so great…the beautiful, lived-in vibe of Sherwood Forest, the clashing-yet-mixing dynamics of British manners and southern charm, and especially the outsized personalities of mean ol’ Prince John, the angelic Maid Marian, and the people’s champion, the bandit Robin Hood!”

Weisman shares Cosby’s enthusiasm for returning to Sherwood Forest. The veteran writer has a long-standing affection for both the character and Disney’s interpretation.

Greg Weisman added, “I’m very psyched to be working on one of my all-time favorite versions of one of my all-time favorite characters!”

A Rare Return to Comics

Despite its status among Disney’s animated classics, Robin Hood has had a surprisingly limited comic book history. More than 50 years have passed since the last major American comic stories featuring Disney’s version of the character.

Comic appearances have also remained limited internationally. Dynamite and the creative team now plan to give Robin Hood a larger stage for his battles with the law, clashes with Prince John, and heroic adventures.

Disney’s Robin Hood Legacy

Disney released Robin Hood in theaters in 1973. The animated film has continued to reach new generations in the decades since its debut.

The movie transformed the classic 12th-century English legend into an anthropomorphic adventure. Its interpretation introduced audiences to distinctive versions of Robin Hood, Maid Marian, Little John, Friar Tuck, the Sheriff of Nottingham, and many other familiar characters.

Ranaldi will bring those characters into the new comic series with his own interpretation of Disney’s designs. His artwork will help return readers to the familiar world of Sherwood Forest while expanding it through new stories.

Comic Stars Assemble for the Covers

Dynamite is also marking Robin Hood’s return with a lineup of prominent cover artists. Cosby, who also serves as editor, has assembled several major comic book talents for the launch.

Joshua Middleton and David Nakayama will contribute new interpretations of the Disney characters. They are joined by David Aja (Hawkeye) and Phil Hester (Green Arrow), two artists closely associated with famous comic book archers.

Nathan Szerdy also joins the initial cover lineup. Collectors can expect additional surprises through a mystery blind bag when Robin Hood begins its new adventures this November.
