Konami Cross Media NY has partnered with Mad Cave Studios to create a new comic book series based on Konami’s Contra video game franchise. The agreement will bring the action series to print through several formats.
The Partnership Expands the Contra Universe
Mad Cave Studios will publish a 12-issue comic series. The company will also release several trade paperback collections and a deluxe edition.
The licensing agreement covers the U.S., Canada, Latin America, the U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The project aims to reach longtime fans and introduce new readers to the franchise.
“The adrenaline-pumping world of ‘Contra’ has always been rooted in rich, character-driven action, making it a perfect candidate for the comic book medium,” said Jennifer Coleman, senior vice president of licensing and marketing at Konami Cross Media NY. “Mad Cave Studios has a proven pedigree for delivering high-impact narratives across a diverse range of genres. We are thrilled to partner with a publisher that shares our passion for the IP and has the creative vision to expand the Contra universe for both long-time fans and new readers.”
Mad Cave Plans a Character-Focused Story
Miami-based Mad Cave Studios publishes comics through several imprints. Its portfolio includes Maverick, Nakama Press and Papercutz.
The publisher plans to preserve the franchise’s explosive action. It will also build a deeper, character-focused story around the source material.
“‘Contra’ is a cornerstone of gaming history, and we are honored to take the mantle of bringing its explosive energy to the page,” said Mark London, chief executive officer and chief creative officer at Mad Cave Studios. “Our team is dedicated to cultivating an impactful, character-focused story that honors the source material while pushing the boundaries of what fans expect from a sci-fi action comic. We can’t wait to show the world what we’ve been building.”
Mad Cave Studios will release the first issue in January 2027. Fans can find it at local comic shops and major book retailers.
