Xolo Maridueña Will Return As Blue Beetle In ‘Man Of Tomorrow’

Xolo Maridueña will reprise his role as Jaime Reyes, also known as Blue Beetle, in Man of Tomorrow. The appearance will mark the character’s official debut in the DC Universe.

The upcoming Superman sequel is currently filming in Atlanta, Georgia. Maridueña previously played Reyes in the 2023 film Blue Beetle.

James Gunn Had Plans for Blue Beetle

Before Blue Beetle reached theaters, James Gunn described Reyes as the “first DCU character.” His comments indicated that the hero would eventually make the transition from the DC Extended Universe to the new DCU.

Gunn later hinted that Blue Beetle might appear during the final episodes of Peacemaker Season 2. However, the character did not appear in the series.

The Film Faced Box Office Challenges

Blue Beetle ended its theatrical run as the lowest-grossing film in the DCEU. Its box office performance created uncertainty about the character’s future.

Some questioned whether DC Studios would change course and move away from Maridueña’s version of the hero. Maridueña remained confident that he would wear the Scarab armor again.

Maridueña Predicted His Return

During a 2024 interview on the Saturn Awards red carpet, the Cobra Kai actor discussed his future as Blue Beetle. He expressed confidence that the character would return, even though he did not know where Reyes would appear next.

“I know we’ll see Blue Beetle again, whether it comes in the form of Blue Beetle 2 or wherever,” said Maridueña. “It’s been really great to work alongside James [Gunn] and Peter [Safran], who have graciously folded us into their new universe even though it wasn’t part of what they came up with. It’s an honor. Now, where Blue Beetle heads in the future? I don’t know. But I can confidently say that we will see him soon.”

Man of Tomorrow Expands Its Team

Reyes’ involvement adds to indications that Man of Tomorrow will feature a larger team of heroes. Superman may assemble allies beyond the members of the Justice Gang for the battle against Brainiac.

Blue Beetle’s appearance will also bring another established character into Gunn and Safran’s DC Universe. The role gives Maridueña an opportunity to continue Jaime Reyes’ story within the new continuity.
