The first trailer for “Avengers: Doomsday” is finally here. After Marvel showed footage to CinemaCon attendees in April, the full trailer is now public and brings together nearly every hero in the MCU.
The MCU’s Biggest Team-Up Since ‘Endgame’
“Doomsday” serves as the culmination of the MCU’s multiverse-spanning storytelling over the past seven years and three Phases. That journey began after “Avengers: Endgame,” which became the second-highest-grossing movie of all time.
The new team-up film brings together almost every major character from across the MCU. They will face the franchise’s latest major villain, Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. in his return to Marvel.
Doctor Doom Takes on the Avengers
The trailer shows Marvel’s heroes assembling as Doctor Doom prepares to unleash a war across the multiverse. Thor faces Doom while also reuniting with Chris Evans’ Captain America, who makes his long-awaited return to the MCU after “Avengers: Endgame.”
Several characters from Fox’s “X-Men” films also officially cross into the Avengers’ universe. They include Professor Xavier, Magneto, Mystique, Cyclops and Channing Tatum’s Gambit from “Deadpool and Wolverine.”
The Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts are also joining the fight. After appearing on the big screen last year, both teams return to help the Avengers save the multiverse.
The Russo Brothers Return
“Doomsday” hits theaters on Dec. 18, followed by “Avengers: Secret Wars” one year later. The Russo Brothers will direct both upcoming “Avengers” films.
The filmmakers previously directed “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Avengers: Endgame” and two “Captain America” movies. Their return puts them back at the center of Marvel’s next major crossover event.
Robert Downey Jr. Becomes Doctor Doom
Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU after Iron Man sacrificed himself to defeat Thanos and save the world in “Endgame.” This time, however, he will not return as his original and iconic Marvel character.
Marvel has not fully explained how Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom connects to Tony Stark. It is likely that Doom is a variant of Iron Man from another universe.
Doctor Doom briefly appeared in the post-credits scene of “Fantastic Four: First Steps.” His face remained hidden during the appearance, leaving the full nature of Downey Jr.’s new Marvel role a mystery.
