Dynamite is expanding its new Buffyverse lineup with the addition of Angel.
After announcing the return of Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics with Kelly Thompson leading the charge, the publisher has revealed a companion series fans have been waiting for. Angel launches this August from Thompson and artist Giulia Giacomino.
Angel Comes Home
Once the terrifying vampire known as Angelus, Angel was cursed for his crimes with the return of his soul. That curse changed everything. His new humanity brought him to the quiet town of Sunnydale, where he crossed paths with Buffy Summers. Their star-crossed romance became one of the defining relationships of the Buffyverse.
After that story reached its tragic end, Angel left for Los Angeles. There, he became a detective focused on supernatural cases and helping the helpless.
But plans do not always hold. Sometimes, going home becomes unavoidable. And sometimes, trying to fix one mistake only creates more chaos.
That is where this story begins.
Kelly Thompson Leads a New Buffyverse Event
Best-selling and Eisner Award-winning writer Kelly Thompson, known for Absolute Wonder Woman, Birds of Prey, Captain Marvel, and Black Widow, will write both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.
The two titles are designed as a seamless event story. Together, they will reshape the Buffyverse and set up a new status quo.
Thompson teams with artist Giulia Giacomino on Angel. Giacomino broke out at Dynamite on Lilo & Stitch and comes from Mirka Andolfo’s Arancia Studio. Alongside Buffy artist Stephen Byrne, she will help bring these characters back for longtime fans and new readers.
Colorist Lee Loughridge and letterer Jeff Eckleberry complete the creative team.
Two Titles, One Connected Story
Thompson has described the crossover as “setting the table” for a new Buffyverse status quo.
Angel #1 picks up directly after the events of Buffy #1. Fans are encouraged to read both series in release order to get the full story. Dynamite is also teasing major surprises that will be revealed when the books arrive.
The format gives the creative team room to explore the relationships, history, and emotional ties that define these characters. At the same time, each title keeps its own identity. Angel narrates and guides his series, while Buffy does the same in hers.
“Starting with a big universe-defining event book opening feels risky and like a big ask of the readers, but for the idea itself to be done properly – for all the character moments and action set pieces, and emotional tumult to land, we really needed the page real estate,” said writer Kelly Thompson. “And the idea demanded most of the main cast from both books to be involved, which is something that can easily tip a book over – but combining the two books for the first arc and telling one big interconnected Buffyverse story gave us the room to do the concept justice.”
Variant Covers and Collector Editions
Angel will also arrive with a strong cover lineup.
David Nakayama provides the lead cover, which pairs with his Buffy cover. Clayton Crain, Meredith McClaren, and Meghan Hetrick also contribute covers that reflect the tone of the series.
Dynamite will also launch a series of Icon covers, beginning with remastered artwork by Jenny Frison.
Collectors can also look for a mystery blind bag edition. Each blind bag includes three premium variant covers selected at random. The range includes logo-free editions, line art presentations, and original artwork exclusive to the release.
