Rick and Morty is heading toward theaters.
Jacob Hair, a longtime director on the Adult Swim hit, is in talks to direct an animated feature for Warner Bros. Hair has directed episodes of the series since 2019.
Warner Bros. has not revealed plot details. The film remains in early development.
Jacob Hair Moves From the Series to the Movie
Hair already plays a major role in the franchise. He serves as supervising director on Rick and Morty, which launches its ninth season Sunday.
Dan Harmon confirmed Tuesday in a junket interview with CinemaBlend that the team chose Hair without looking outside the show.
“Jacob Hair is the director. We didn’t shop around,” Harmon said.
Adult Swim Expands the Franchise
Rick and Morty debuted in 2013 and quickly became one of Adult Swim’s biggest shows. The Emmy-winning series has ranked as basic cable’s most-watched comedy over the past several seasons.
Adult Swim will also expand the franchise with President Curtis. The spinoff stars Keith David in the title role and is set to premiere soon.
The Series Continues After Major Changes
Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland co-created Rick and Morty. The series follows inventor Rick Sanchez as he travels across the universe with his teen grandson, Morty.
Adult Swim cut ties with Roiland in early 2023 after authorities filed felony domestic abuse charges against him. Officials later dismissed the charges.
Roiland had voiced both title characters before Adult Swim recast the roles.
Rick and Morty Keeps Moving Forward
The series shows no signs of slowing down. Adult Swim has renewed the show through Season 12, while Warner Bros. now develops the franchise for the big screen.
