‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Coming To Television

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is roaring back to life. This time, it is heading to television.

After months of competitive bidding, A24 has secured the rights to the next chapter of the long-running horror franchise. The studio plans to launch the property as a TV series inspired by The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, the landmark film that introduced Leatherface and his murderous family.

Creative Team Takes Shape

The series will feature Glen Powell as an executive producer. JT Mollner, writer of The Long Walk, is attached to direct. Powell will serve only as a producer and is not expected to appear on screen.

Film Project Also in Development

The same producing team, along with Image Nation, is developing a separate Texas Chainsaw Massacre film. That project remains in early stages.

Mollner is not involved in the movie version.

A Fresh Way In

Mollner emphasized his respect for the original film in a statement.

“I’ve said publicly that I’m not interested in remaking perfect films, and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a perfect film,” he said. “Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel created something bold, transgressive, and truly seminal.”

He added that the series format offers new creative space.

“When the opportunity for a long form exploration into this world arose, I saw it as a fresh way in, as well as a way to honor the existing folklore,” Mollner said. “I can’t imagine better partners for this approach than A24.”

Powell Praises the Partnership

Powell also shared his enthusiasm for the project.

“The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is one of my favorite films,” he said. “It defined a generation of horror films. More than half a century later, it remains one of the definitive movies of my home state.”

He called the collaboration with A24 and Mollner a dream scenario.

“With a marquee home in A24 and a visionary filmmaker in JT Mollner, I couldn’t have dreamed of a better team,” Powell said.

A24’s Strong Horror Pedigree

A24 brings a proven horror résumé to the project. The studio is behind films such as Hereditary and Midsommar, as well as Ti West’s X/Pearl/MaXXXine trilogy.

The company is also producing another classic franchise adaptation with Crystal Lake for Peacock.

A Franchise with a Long History

Since the original 1974 film, the franchise has produced eight sequels, prequels, and remakes. The most recent entry was a 2022 film released by Netflix.

With A24 now leading the next phase, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is preparing for its most ambitious reinvention yet.
