Dynamite Entertainment, Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, and superstar writer Jason Aaron are reviving a legend. In January, Thundarr the Barbarian storms into comics for the first time, delivering a sword-and-sorcery event fans have awaited for decades.
The original animated series ran for two seasons in the early 1980s and ignited the imaginations of a generation. It fused barbarian battles, wizard duels, and monstrous threats with a post-apocalyptic future set nearly 2,000 years ahead.
Jason Aaron Leads the Charge
Jason Aaron brings his award-winning storytelling to Thundarr’s world. With 25 years of experience writing top characters and franchises, Aaron has built a reputation for redefining heroes. He previously helped resurrect another barbarian icon, and now he’s ready to do the same for Thundarr.
Artist Kewber Baal joins Aaron to unleash bold, cinematic visuals. Known for Vampirella, James Bond, and Jennifer Blood, Baal packs every page with energy, action, and raw power. His dynamic artwork will bring Thundarr’s blazing Sunsword and epic battles to life.
A Story That Pushes the Legend Forward
“This world of savagery, super-science, and sorcery shaped me as a writer,” said Aaron. “Thundarr the Barbarian isn’t just a show I loved—it’s part of who I am. Writing his first comic book adventure is a dream come true. I’m determined to honor the original series while launching Thundarr into his biggest story yet.”
The new series throws Thundarr and his allies, Princess Ariel and Ookla the Mok, into nonstop conflict as they fight to protect the last remnants of humanity from mutant overlords and ruthless wizards. When classic villains Gemini and Mindok join forces to destroy them, Thundarr must battle to save the future itself. The journey takes readers back to 1994, when a runaway planet shattered Earth and unleashed chaos. For the first time, the series will reveal Thundarr’s origin, his first encounters with Ariel and Ookla, and the moment he first wielded the Sunsword.
A Historic Return to Comic Book Roots
Editor Joe Rybandt has assembled a powerhouse team of artists to create stunning variant covers, including Rob Liefeld, Dan Panosian, Francesco Mattina, Michael Cho, Joseph Michael Linsner, and Björn Barends.
Despite its strong ties to the comics world, Thundarr the Barbarian never received its own series—until now. Legendary creators shaped the original show: Jack Kirby crafted its iconic look, Alex Toth designed its characters, and Steve Gerber wrote its groundbreaking stories. Comics heavyweights like Martin Pasko, Mark Evanier, and Roy Thomas contributed to Thundarr’s adventures. Now, those connections return to the medium where they belong.
A New Age Begins
Fans got their first glimpse of the project at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con. This year’s New York Comic Con will unveil major new details ahead of the series’ launch in January.
The wait is over. Thundarr’s Sunsword blazes again. And this time, he’s ready to conquer the comic book world.
