Jac Schaeffer is developing a new “Stargate” television series for Amazon MGM Studios. Sources expect a writers’ room to open in the near future.
The project falls under Schaeffer’s overall deal with Amazon MGM, announced earlier this year. Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures will executive produce alongside Schaeffer.
Amazon Takes Another Run at ‘Stargate’
The project marks Amazon’s second attempt to develop a new “Stargate” series. Martin Gero previously worked on another television entry in the science-fiction franchise, but that project did not move forward.
Schaeffer Brings Marvel Experience
Schaeffer created “WandaVision,” the first Marvel Cinematic Universe series to premiere on Disney+. Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprised their film roles as Wanda and Vision.
The Marvel Studios series earned 23 Primetime Emmy Award nominations and numerous other accolades. It also ranked among the most well-reviewed and widely praised television shows of 2021.
Schaeffer followed “WandaVision” with the spinoff “Agatha All Along.” Kathryn Hahn returned as Agatha Harkness, the character she introduced in “WandaVision.”
On “Agatha All Along,” Schaeffer served as showrunner, writer, executive producer, and director. Before joining Marvel, she wrote the Disney animated featurette “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure” and the 2019 comedy “The Hustle.”
Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson starred in “The Hustle.” The film remade the 1980s comedy “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.”
A Franchise With Three Television Series
“Stargate” began with the 1994 film starring James Spader and Kurt Russell. The movie led to “Stargate SG-1,” which ran for 10 seasons.
Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge were among the stars of “Stargate SG-1.” The franchise expanded with “Stargate Atlantis,” which aired for five seasons between 2004 and 2008.
“Stargate Universe” followed in 2009. That series ran for two seasons, ending in 2011.
