Dynamite Entertainment is bringing MonsterVision to comics this December with a brand-new series starring Joe Bob Briggs and Darcy the Mail Girl. The book promises Texas-style horror comedy, monster-hunting chaos, and plenty of B-movie attitude.
The new series sends the drive-in icons on an adventure packed with horror parodies, Easter eggs, and over-the-top genre mayhem. Dynamite also teases a major revelation that will shake up the duo’s familiar dynamic.
David Avallone Takes the Wheel
Writer David Avallone leads the new MonsterVision series after previously working on Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. His experience with horror hosts, pulp storytelling, camp, and macabre humor makes him a natural fit for Joe Bob Briggs and his world.
Avallone will lean into the personality, humor, and mythology surrounding the longtime horror host. The series will also celebrate Joe Bob’s career while poking fun at classic horror movies and B-movie traditions.
“Joe Bob looks like he’d be perfectly comfortable starring in a Western: he’s square-jawed, handsome and tall, but he channels that into something subversive,” said writer David Avallone. “That’s something I can easily understand and get into.”
Edu Menna Brings the Monsters to Life
Artist Edu Menna joins Avallone for the new series. Menna has experience drawing both monsters and real-world music icons through comics featuring Alice Cooper, KISS, and Vampirella.
Together, Avallone and Menna will take readers on a road trip through a world filled with monsters, horror references, and Texas-flavored comedy. Their collaboration aims to deliver both a parody of classic genre films and a tribute to the long-running legacy of Joe Bob Briggs.
Darcy the Mail Girl Joins the Hunt
No modern Joe Bob Briggs adventure would feel complete without Darcy the Mail Girl. The fan-favorite co-star will play a major role in the comic alongside Briggs.
Her involvement also gives Avallone another opportunity to feature the kind of fearless heroine that has appeared throughout his work. Darcy said joining Dynamite carries special meaning for her as a longtime fan of the publisher.
“I’m ecstatic to be working with Dynamite!” Darcy said. “I’ve been a genuine fan of theirs for decades, so having the opportunity to create something with a company whose work I truly love feels incredibly special.”
Variant Covers Celebrate Horror History
Darcy will also appear on photo covers for the series. Artist Dave Acosta, another veteran of horror-host comics, provides the lead illustrated cover.
Kewber Baal and Robert Hack also contribute covers, including an homage to the classic era of horror movie posters. Dynamite will offer several collectible editions for fans looking for additional variations.
One special edition of Acosta’s cover will feature signatures from both Joe Bob Briggs and Darcy. Fans can also purchase a mystery blind bag that may include rare exclusive cover variations and other collectible editions.
Joe Bob Briggs Returns to ‘MonsterVision’
Joe Bob Briggs has built a decades-long career as a film critic, writer, actor, comic performer, and horror host. His mix of movie commentary, comedy, and genre expertise has made him one of the most recognizable personalities in horror entertainment.
Briggs hosted Joe Bob’s Drive-In Theater on The Movie Channel from 1986 to 1996. He later hosted TNT’s MonsterVision from 1996 to 2000 before returning with The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs on Shudder/AMC beginning in 2018.
Now, Briggs is bringing that same approach to comic books. MonsterVision launches from Dynamite Entertainment this December.
