HBO has described Lanterns as a “dark, earth-based mystery.” Most of the early marketing has leaned into that grounded approach. But the latest trailer makes one thing clear. The DC Studios series will not stay entirely on Earth.
The new footage includes a shot of a planet that does not look like Earth. It also shows Green Lantern Corps member Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, in the familiar uniform from the comics. The setting appears to be otherworldly.
The first teaser only hinted at the power of a Green Lantern ring. This trailer shows more of what the ring can do.
Hal Jordan and John Stewart Clash
The trailer continues to build tension between Hal Jordan and new Lantern Corps recruit John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre.
It also confirms that Nathan Fillion will reprise his role as Guy Gardner from last year’s Superman film. Laura Linney also appears in the trailer in an undisclosed role.
Late in the footage, Stewart tells Linney’s character, “I was raised fearless, and I’ll do this better than [Jordan] has ever done it before.”
She answers, “Then go and get it, John Stewart.”
HBO Sets Premiere Date
HBO also confirmed that Lanterns will premiere Aug. 16.
The series stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, J. Alphonse Nicholson and Jasmine Cephas Jones.
Creative Team Behind the Series
Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King co-created the series. Mundy is known for Ozark. Lindelof’s credits include Watchmen and The Leftovers. King is an Eisner Award-winning comics writer.
The trio wrote the first episode. Mundy serves as showrunner.
Mundy, Lindelof and King executive produce alongside DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, Ron Schmidt and James Hawes. Hawes directed the first two episodes.
Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov also directed episodes.
