Magnetic Press launches Florent Maudoux’s action packed series FREAKS’ SQUEELE on Kickstarter. The campaign introduces the seven volume saga to American readers for the first time. The series builds a devoted international following after its 2008 debut, pulling inspiration from RPGs, Hong Kong action films, and classical art. The result is a sharp mix of manga energy, western comic grit, and Franco Belgian style.
A Wild Genre Mashup
“Whether you’re into supernatural school drama, genre bending art, or just want to see a werewolf fight a bear for dorm territory, FREAKS’ SQUEELE delivers the goods with claws, swords, and sarcasm,” says Magnetic Publisher Mike Kennedy. “Think Jujutsu Kaisen meets X Men by way of Scott Pilgrim, with a dash of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and a heavy pour of French irreverence.”
Inside the World of Aspiring Heroes
The story takes place in a world filled with demons, werewolves, gods, and mutants, many descended from mythological lines. Super hero work is a regulated profession. Students attend accredited universities where they train in combat and ethics. They face duels, tournaments, and high stakes trials that are often deadly. These contests air for public entertainment.
The narrative follows three freshmen — Chance, Li Xiong Mao, and Shadow — as they confront conspiracies, sabotage, and the pressure of rising hero fame.
A Sharp Look at Power
“The world of FREAKS’ SQUEELE is a critique of power structures disguised as a superhero romp,” Kennedy says. “Every sword swing, spell, and sarcastic quip carries history, trauma, and rebellion. It is deeply addictive storytelling.”
