Skybound Entertainment and Universal Products & Experiences have announced the remastered release of Universal Monsters: Frankenstein #1 (of 2). The limited comic book series comes from award-winning artist and writer Michael Walsh of Exquisite Corpses.
Walsh returns to the seminal horror classic with a new black-and-white presentation. The remastered edition brings the cry of “It’s alive!” back to comic shops this October.
A Two-Issue Double Feature
The story originally debuted as a four-issue limited series. The new release presents it as a two-issue double feature.
Universal Monsters: Frankenstein explores the shocking story behind one body part used to create the monster from the original film. The result adds a new human cost to one of horror’s most famous creations.
The Story Behind the Monster
The series follows Dr. Henry Frankenstein as he begins his unholy quest to create life. To complete his work, he robs the grave of a decorated police officer.
Frankenstein needs specific parts for his experiment. He is searching for a strong pair of hands.
But the corpse has a son. The boy is mourning his father, and his grief will forever change Frankenstein’s life.
Skybound Celebrates the Horror Icon
Skybound says the new format gives fans a classic presentation of Walsh’s story. Caitlin Chappell, Assistant Editor at Skybound, praised the project and its place in the Universal Monsters line.

Part of a Growing Universal Monsters Line
The release continues Skybound and Universal Products & Experiences’ expanding Universal Monsters comic line. Frankenstein followed the Eisner Award-nominated Universal Monsters: Dracula by James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds.
It also followed Creature From the Black Lagoon Lives! by Dan Watters, Ram V and Matthew Roberts. Later titles included Faith Erin Hicks’ The Mummy, James Tynion IV and DANI’s The Invisible Man, and Tyler Boss and Martin Simmonds’ Phantom of the Opera.
The line also includes the currently releasing Blood of the Wolf Man by Joshua Williamson and Leomacs. It recently added the announced The Bride of Frankenstein Lives! by Kelly Thompson and Mattia De Iulis.
Each installment pairs top creative talent with one of pop culture’s most legendary horror icons. The books deliver fresh, standalone stories for longtime fans and new readers.
Universal Monsters: Frankenstein Black & White Special #1 arrives at comic book shops and digital platforms on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. The remastered issue gives readers a new way to experience Walsh’s vision of the classic monster.
