Dynamite Launches New Gargoyles Era This August

Gargoyles

Dynamite Entertainment is launching a new era for Gargoyles this August with a brand-new Gargoyles #1.

The series continues the acclaimed chronology from franchise creator Greg Weisman. It also gives new readers a clear jumping-on point for the beloved franchise.

The story returns to the world of the Defenders of the Night. One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. Gargoyles lived as stone by day and warriors by night. They protected humans, but those same humans betrayed them. A magic spell froze them in stone for a thousand years.

Now, in Manhattan, the spell is broken. The Gargoyles live again.

Greg Weisman Returns to a Story Decades in the Making

The new series is designed for longtime fans and first-time readers. Fans who know the animated series, the classic comics, and Dynamite’s current era will find the next chapter of the saga. New readers will also get a full entry point into a world built on character, action, and layered storytelling.

“For me, this is a story thirty years in the making. One I’ve been longing to tell,” said writer Greg Weisman. “So longtime fans are seriously not going to want to miss this. At the same time, it’s also a great place for new readers who know nothing about Gargoyles to jump aboard. We’re making sure that everything you need to know is right there on the page. Your Gargoyles addiction begins here and now!”

The Saga Moves Into 1997

The original Gargoyles animated series moved forward in relative real time. The comics have continued that approach, with each phase picking up from that point in the timeline.

Now, the saga reaches the pivotal era of 1997.

The new series sends fans back to the energy of the 1990s. It also taps into the bold style and high-impact storytelling that made Gargoyles stand out among animated series of that decade.

A Stolen Egg Raises the Stakes

The Manhattan Clan sits at the center of the new story.

Gargoyles only have eggs every 20 years. The clan has been caring for one egg playfully nicknamed “Egwardo.” But that egg has now been stolen by their arch-enemy, Demona.

As the Defenders of the Night search for the missing egg, they face another threat. An ancient and all-powerful evil has awakened. It carries a vendetta against the entire world.

Dynamite says fans can expect those dangers and more each month in the new series.

A New Creative Team Joins the Franchise

The new series follows a strong lineup of Gargoyles artists, including George Kambadais, Drew Moss, Ciro Cangialosi, Pasquale Qualano, Frank Paur, and Tad Stones.

This time, artist Gerardo Gambone joins Weisman as his latest collaborator. They are joined by colorist Robby Bevard and letterer Jeff Eckleberry.

Longtime Gargoyles comics editor Nate Cosby has also assembled a cover team for the launch. Meghan Hetrick and Sebastian Piriz contribute covers, alongside returning franchise artists Drew Moss and Frank Paur.

A New Day for the Manhattan Clan

Editor Nate Cosby said the series opens a new chapter for the franchise.

“Welcome to the first new ONGOING GARGOYLES SERIES in years! It’s a new day (night?) for our heroes. New characters, new stakes, new adventures! If you’ve ever been Gargoyles-curious, THIS is the perfect jumping-on point to be introduced to the Manhattan Clan. And if you’re a Day One fan, Greg Weisman’s got you…he’s beautifully threading centuries of Gargoyles lore through this new tale, and grounding the emotional stakes for Goliath and all of his brethren!”

Fans can also ask their local comic shop about premium mystery blind bags. Each blind bag includes three copies of the issue and may feature limited edition and exclusive cover variations, including line art, foil and metal variants, and other surprises.
