‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ Holds Off ‘Mortal Kombat II’

The Devil Wears Prada 2

The Devil Wears Prada 2 pulled in $43 million domestically in its second weekend. It also earned $75.8 million overseas, pushing its global total to $433.2 million. The film has already surpassed the entire worldwide run of the original film, which finished with $326 million before inflation adjustments.

Strong Hold for Prada Sequel

The film dropped just 43 percent in North America and 46 percent internationally. The performance marks another major win for the 20th Century label under The Walt Disney Company.

Disney also reached another milestone over the weekend. The studio became the first Hollywood company to cross $2 billion in global ticket sales during 2026.

Mortal Kombat Opens Within Expectations

Despite finishing second, Mortal Kombat II still opened within the range projected by New Line Cinema and Warner Bros.. The studios expected a domestic debut between $35 million and $40 million, with a global launch between $65 million and $80 million.

Tracking services had projected a stronger opening. Some forecasts showed the R-rated sequel earning at least $45 million domestically and potentially beating Prada 2.

By Saturday, both films appeared headed for a near tie. Early projections based on Friday numbers estimated each title would land between $40 million and $41 million domestically. By Sunday morning, Mortal Kombat II settled into second place with an estimated $40 million opening weekend.

Internationally, the film debuted with $23 million overseas for a global start of $63 million, landing at the lower end of expectations.

Karl Urban Joins the Franchise

The original Mortal Kombat opened simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max during the pandemic in 2021. The film became a major streaming success while earning $23 million domestically in its opening weekend. It eventually finished with $42 million in North America and $84.4 million worldwide.

Simon McQuoid returned to direct Mortal Kombat II from a script by Jeremy Slater. Karl Urban joined the cast as fan-favorite character Johnny Cage, portrayed as a washed-up action star from the 1990s recruited to compete in a tournament that will determine the fate of Earthrealm.

Mother’s Day Audience Helped Prada

Mother’s Day audiences were always expected to shape the weekend race. That gave Prada 2 a clear advantage with female moviegoers. The sequel is quickly emerging as the biggest female-driven box office hit since Barbie in 2023 after launching the summer movie season with a strong debut last weekend.

As expected, Mortal Kombat II drew a heavily male audience. Men made up 73 percent of ticket buyers.

The top 12 movies of the weekend, as of Sunday, May 10, are as follows.
