Lewis LaRosa has been a standout in comics since his debut at the start of the 21st century. His work blends realism, superhero energy, and a master’s use of light and shadow. The result is a style fans call “carbon based.”

Now, Oni Press is celebrating his career with CARBON BASED: THE ART OF LEWIS LaROSA. The art book launches today on Kickstarter with exclusive editions and collectibles.

This is LaRosa’s first full retrospective. The oversized hardcover spans more than 250 pages. Inside, readers will find raw line art, rare covers, character designs, and concept sketches. The book showcases work from Marvel, Valiant, BOOM! Studios, Epic Games, and more. Fans will see pieces from series like Bloodshot Reborn, Punisher MAX, Uncanny X-Men, Shadowman, X-O Manowar, and others.

The edition measures 10 x 12 inches. It includes an introduction by Oni Press President Hunter Gorinson, plus commentary from LaRosa and Warren Simons, former Valiant Editor-in-Chief. Fellow creators such as Lee Bermejo, Dave Johnson, Matt Kindt, Jeff Lemire, and Yanick Paquette also share their thoughts on LaRosa’s work.

The Kickstarter offers more than the standard hardcover. Fans can back special editions, including foil-stamped covers, slipcased versions, signed and remarqued copies, and portfolio sets of LaRosa’s most iconic Valiant covers. There are also premium T-shirts, fine art prints, original commissions, and even the original cover art for CARBON BASED.

LaRosa is thrilled. “It’s happening, guys!” he said. “This retrospective covers more than 20 years of my art. From my early Punisher MAX work at Marvel to the Valiant relaunch, it’s all here. I’ve included rare sketches, my analog process, and plenty of figure work, robots, and dinosaurs. I hope this book inspires people to pick up a pencil and draw.”

Gorinson added: “Calling Lewis LaRosa ‘immensely talented’ doesn’t do him justice. I’ve worked with him for more than a decade, and it’s an honor to collect his career in one volume. This is a heavyweight coffee-table book that captures the grit and grandeur of his style. Lewis belongs among the greats.”

Now entering his third decade in comics, LaRosa continues to earn global praise. His highly detailed, high-impact art secures his place as one of the medium’s most powerful voices.
