Dynamite Entertainment is bringing two legendary artistic families together for a new chapter in Fire and Ice. The fantasy world is moving to the tabletop with a board game that lets fans battle, roleplay, and explore its universe.
The game originally launched through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. Fans who missed the campaign will get another chance when the game arrives in retail stores this November.
A Fantasy Classic Returns
Fire and Ice hit theaters 40 years ago as a collaboration between animation pioneer Ralph Bakshi and legendary fantasy artist Frank Frazetta. Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway wrote the screenplay.
Dynamite has since revived the world and its characters through a new comic series. The board game expands that revival by giving players a new way to enter the fantasy setting.
The Battle Between Fire and Ice
The world of Fire and Ice depends on a delicate balance between its tribes and clans. That balance begins to collapse when Lord Nekron sets out to destroy the kingdom of fire.
Nekron uses dark sorcery to summon an unstoppable glacier that destroys everything in its path. The growing threat forces many of King Jarol’s subjects to flee.
War soon becomes inevitable. Princess Teegra, Larn the Warrior, and the mysterious Darkwolf must join forces to shift the balance of power.
Tactical Battles and Roleplaying
The Fire and Ice board game uses a “tactical skirmish” design for two or more players. Players take control of the heroes of Firekeep as they battle the forces of Icepeak across multiple maps.
Cards, dice, and detailed figures help recreate battles inspired by the rotoscoped animated classic. The game also uses “Rules-Lite” mechanics that allow players to continue their adventures or create original stories through roleplay.
Miniatures and Game Components
The main game includes a collection of miniatures based on familiar Fire and Ice characters. Darkwolf, Teegra, and Larn are among the featured figures.
Supporters who pledged for the game during the initial days of the campaign also receive a special figure of the Subhuman Priestess. The exclusive miniature adds another character from the fantasy world to the tabletop experience.
The game also includes a comprehensive rulebook and six character cards. Players receive 54 event cards, 12 activity cards, and six 10-sided dice decorated with fire and ice motifs.
More than 200 token markers are included as well. Four regional game boards provide the settings for the game’s battles and adventures.
Sara Frazetta Reflects on the Film
Sara Frazetta recalled the personal connection she developed with Fire and Ice through her grandfather. She said the film became an important part of the time they spent together.
“My grandpa introduced me to his film, Fire and Ice when I was in grade school,” said Sara Frazetta. “Watching movies together, especially Fire and Ice, bonded our relationship. We felt the intensity of the scenes together. We were transported into the world he created. It was magical. Fire and Ice has remained in my top favorite films of all time and to be able to reignite the property with the Bakshi family and Dynamite is incredibly exciting!”
Bakshi Productions Looks to the Future
Eddie Bakshi said the project gives the creative teams an opportunity to explore the fantasy world again. He also pointed to longtime fan interest in seeing more material from the property.
“Bakshi Productions is excited to work with the Frazetta Girls and Dynamite Comics to create new Fire & Ice media,” shared Eddie Bakshi. “It is an honor to again explore the fantastic world that Frank Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi created. I know that Bakshi fans have been waiting a long time for more Fire & Ice material, and that’s what we plan to give them.”
