Amazon Axes New ‘Stargate’ Series

Stargate

Amazon has scrapped its planned new “Stargate” TV series, according to Variety.

The show received a series order in November 2025. Martin Gero was set to write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner. Gero has deep ties to the franchise. Early in his career, he wrote for both “Stargate SG-1” and “Stargate: Atlantis.”

Concerns Over the Show’s Appeal

According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Amazon executives had concerns about Gero’s version of the series. They questioned whether it would reach viewers beyond the franchise’s dedicated fanbase.

Amazon first began looking at new “Stargate” projects in 2022. That effort followed the company’s acquisition of MGM Studios, the producer behind the franchise.

Gero’s series will not move forward. However, Amazon is still exploring new ways to expand the “Stargate” universe.

Martin Gero Remains at Amazon MGM Studios

Gero remains under an overall deal at Amazon MGM Studios. He will continue developing projects for the studio.

Amazon never released plot details for his version of the show.

The executive producer team also included Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures. Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who co-wrote the original film, were also executive producers. Emmerich directed that film.

Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi served as consulting producers. Both are longtime creative leaders within the “Stargate” franchise.

A Long-Running Sci-Fi Franchise

“Stargate” began as a 1994 movie starring James Spader and Kurt Russell.

The film later led to “Stargate SG-1,” which became a hit television series. It ran for 10 seasons and starred Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge, among others.

The franchise then expanded with “Stargate Atlantis.” That spinoff ran for five seasons from 2004 to 2008. The third series, “Stargate Universe” ran from 2009 – 2011.

The “Stargate” universe also includes two direct-to-video movies and three additional TV shows. The most recent was “Stargate Origins” in 2018.
