Gerry Conway

Gerry Conway, the influential writer who co-created dozens of characters for Marvel Comics and DC Comics, has died at 73. His creations include The Punisher, Ms. Marvel, Firestorm, and Power Girl. He also wrote some of the most influential Spider-Man stories ever published.

Conway had been battling cancer. He made his final convention appearance at CCXP in December and held a store signing near his home in Thousand Oaks, California in February.

A Lasting Impact on Comics and Film

Kevin Feige paid tribute in a statement.
“Gerry Conway brought real stakes to his writing, able to weave together sensational superheroics with the human and relatable, and in doing so created some of the most memorable stories and characters of all time,” he said.

Feige added that Conway’s work shaped both comics and film. His influence can be seen in projects like Werewolf by Night and characters such as Daredevil, Spider-Man, and the Punisher.
“He was a wonderful collaborator and friend to so many and will be dearly missed,” Feige said.

A New Voice for a New Generation

Conway emerged during a creative shift in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was part of a younger generation of writers and artists who grew up as fans of comics. Alongside creators like Len Wein and Marv Wolfman, he brought fresh energy to the medium.

His stories focused on emotional depth and real-world stakes. That approach connected strongly with readers in their twenties and helped redefine superhero storytelling.

From Teenage Writer to Marvel Leader

Born in Brooklyn in 1952, Conway started writing comics as a teenager. He pushed his way into the industry by visiting DC offices and meeting editors. He soon landed work on horror and suspense titles before pitching stories to Marvel.

He quickly built a reputation for versatility and speed. Before long, he was writing across multiple titles for both publishers.

Redefining Spider-Man

Conway’s career accelerated when Stan Lee tapped him to take over The Amazing Spider-Man. He was just 19.

A year later, he wrote the landmark two-part story “The Night Gwen Stacy Died.” The arc killed Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker’s girlfriend, and the Green Goblin. The storyline remains one of Marvel’s most important and enduring works.

Creating The Punisher and More

Months after that storyline, Conway introduced Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher, along with the villain Jackal.

Throughout the 1970s, Conway became one of the most prolific writers in comics. Readers picking up a Marvel or DC title during that era had a strong chance of reading his work.

Remembered by Marvel

C. B. Cebulski reflected on Conway’s legacy in a statement.
“From Spider-Man to the Avengers, Iron Man to Captain Marvel, Gerry Conway has deftly written almost every character in the Marvel Universe,” he said.

Cebulski highlighted both Conway’s creativity and emotional storytelling. “He thrilled us with new characters like the Punisher and broke our hearts in emotional tales like ‘The Night Gwen Stacy Died,’ a story that affects Spider-Man to this day.”

He added, “Gerry Conway’s legacy has made an undeniable and indelible impact on the superhero stories we know and love. He will be dearly missed.”
