James Gunn has secured the final key piece of his Man of Tomorrow casting lineup.
After multiple rounds of screen tests, Adria Arjona has landed a mystery role in DC Studios’ upcoming Superman sequel. Reports previously suggested the character could be the comic anti-heroine Maxima, but that has not been confirmed.
Earlier this month, four finalists tested for the role in Atlanta. The group included Eva De Dominici, Sydney Chandler, and Grace Van Patten.
Returning Cast and Expanding Roster
David Corenswet returns as Superman. Nicholas Hoult reprises his role as Lex Luthor. This time, the two characters join forces against Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger.
Several familiar faces also return. Rachel Brosnahan is back as Lois Lane. Skyler Gisondo reprises Jimmy Olsen. Sara Sampaio returns as Eve Teschmacher. Isabela Merced appears again as Hawkgirl. Nathan Fillion returns as Guy Gardner. Edi Gathegi is back as Mister Terrific.
Aaron Pierre will also appear, reprising his role as Green Lantern John Stewart from Lanterns.
A Possible Cosmic Direction
If Arjona is indeed playing Maxima, the sequel may lean further into DC’s cosmic storytelling.
Maxima debuted in Action Comics No. 645 in 1989. Writer Roger Stern and artist George Pérez introduced the character as an alien queen. She has appeared as both an antagonist and a romantic interest for Superman.
Release Plans and DC Slate
Gunn wrote Man of Tomorrow, which is set for release on July 9, 2027. The film follows Superman, which grossed $618.7 million worldwide last year.
DC Studios continues to build its slate. Supergirl arrives in June. Clayface is scheduled for Oct. 23. The Batman: Part II is set for October 2027.
Arjona’s Rising Profile
Arjona continues to build momentum in high-profile projects.
She appeared in the second season of the Star Wars series Andor. She also starred alongside Dakota Johnson in the comedy Splitsville.
Her upcoming slate includes Amazon MGM’s remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, directed by Michael B. Jordan. She will also appear in Onslaught, the latest thriller from Adam Wingard.
