James Gunn is closing in on a key casting choice for Man of Tomorrow. Four actors remain in contention for the role of Maxima. Adria Arjona, Eva De Dominici, Sydney Chandler, and Grace Van Patten recently tested for the part in Atlanta. Gunn is currently preparing the upcoming Man of Tomorrow sequel in the city.
DC Studios declined to comment on the casting process.
Gunn Pushes Back on Casting Reports
Earlier in the day, Gunn addressed online speculation. He took to social media to dispute a report from Deadline that listed names allegedly testing for the role.
Who Is Maxima?
Maxima first appeared in Action Comics No. 645. Writer Roger Stern and artist George Pérez introduced the character in 1989.
She is an alien queen. In the comics, she has served as both a powerful adversary and a romantic interest for Superman.
Returning Cast and Expanding Universe
David Corenswet returns as Superman. The story pairs him with Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, against the threat of Brainiac, portrayed by Lars Eidinger.
The film also features Aaron Pierre, along with returning cast members Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. Sara Sampaio, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, and Edi Gathegi also appear.
Release Plans and Franchise Momentum
Gunn wrote the screenplay for Man of Tomorrow. The film is set for release on July 9, 2027.
It follows the success of Superman, which earned $618.7 million worldwide. That film launched the new DC Studios era under Gunn and Peter Safran.
The studio is also preparing Supergirl for release in June. Corenswet is expected to make a brief appearance.
The Finalists’ Recent Work
Arjona gained attention for her role in Andor and starred opposite Glen Powell in Hit Man. She also appeared in The Belko Experiment, produced by Gunn.
De Dominici appeared in The Cleaning Lady and has a role in the upcoming comedy Balls Up from Amazon MGM Studios.
Chandler broke out with the lead role in Alien: Earth, which is already set for a second season.
Van Patten starred in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox and led the drama Tell Me Lies.
