Bulletproof Coffin Returns With Giant! Cease To Exist At Oni Press

Bulletproof Coffin

Oni Press is bringing The Bulletproof Coffin back to comic shops with a new chapter from original creators David Hine and Shaky Kane. Bulletproof Coffin: Giant! Cease to Exist will arrive in comic shops and bookstores in January 2027.

The 72-page release reunites Hine, co-creator of Spider-Man: Noir, and Kane, known for Man from Maybe and The Beef. It marks the first new installment in their surreal superhero saga since 2021 and the series’ first release through Oni Press.

The multiple Eisner and Harvey Award-winning publisher also plans to collect the complete Bulletproof Coffin saga. Oni Press will begin releasing those collections in 2028.

Hine and Kane Return to the Ficto-Verse

The new story continues the pseudo-psychedelic adventures that began with the self-titled The Bulletproof Coffin series at Image Comics in 2011. Hine and Kane once again turn their attention to their radical deconstruction of the Silver Age superhero tradition.

“There I was enjoying my retirement from the increasingly fraught world of comic books, when my old friend and nemesis Shaky Kane called me up with an offer I couldn’t refuse,” said writer David Hine. “While the boundaries between reality and fiction are breaking down around us, Shaky figured the world needs another shot in the arm from The Bulletproof Coffin. So here it is, a last labour of love and hate from the Dynamic Duo, an antidote to New Fakery and proof that we ain’t dead yet.”

A War for Reality

Inside the hyper-fictional Golden Nugget Comics imprint, the Sons of Technarchy are waging war with weapons of technological control. The cabal consists of hyper-intelligent, all-powerful trillionaires who treat entire realities as disposable playthings.

Standing against them is a strange collection of heroes that serves as existence’s last line of defense. The group includes Eye-We-I, Scarlet Spook, Ramona, Queen of the Stone Age, Red Wraith, Coffin Fly, the Shield of Justice, and more.

The conflict soon moves beyond the boundaries of the fictional universe. As the battle intensifies, Hine and Kane themselves become part of the story and must confront their own demons as creators on the brink.

Bulletproof Coffin: Giant! Cease to Exist blends superheroes, cosmic spectacle, metafiction, and psychedelic storytelling. The story once again challenges the boundary between fiction and reality that has defined the series from the beginning.

Shaky Kane Promises More Hallucinatory Chaos

“Hine and Kane unlock Wishbone Studio for one more time, in this big-shot, one-shot of genre busting hallucinatory hoo-ha!” said artist Shaky Kane. “See the Golden Nugget Heroes as you’ve never, or ever wanted, to see them before! Join the improbably named Eye-We-I and the Scarlet Spook as they embark on a mission to restore order to a world spinning very much askew, lest they quite literally ‘cease to exist’! All depicted in vivid hi-octane Shaky-vision. Now this one you won’t want to miss!”

The new one-shot brings Kane’s visual approach back to a world built around unconventional superheroes and shifting realities. It also gives Hine and Kane another opportunity to place themselves directly inside the mythology they created.

The History of The Bulletproof Coffin

Hine and Kane introduced readers to the “Ficto-Verse” with The Bulletproof Coffin in 2011. The original six-issue miniseries followed comic book collector Steve Neyman as he uncovered a strange connection between real life and obscure, pulp-style vintage comics.

The creators expanded the Ficto-Verse with The Bulletproof Coffin: Disinterred in 2012. They returned again in 2017 with the one-shot Bulletproof Coffin: The Thousand Yard Stare, a meta-sequel that turned Hine and Kane into characters inside their own psychedelic universe.

The most recent stories appeared in the 2021 Kane & Abel one-shot, which included two short stories set in the Bulletproof Coffin world. Bulletproof Coffin: Giant! Cease to Exist will be the first new story in the series since those appearances and the first installment published by Oni Press.

Bulletproof Coffin: Giant! Cease to Exist will be available in comic shops and bookstores in January 2027. Oni Press will begin collecting the complete saga to date in 2028.
