‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Soars To Historic Second Weekend

Spider-Man Brand New Day

Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to dominate the box office. Sony Pictures’ superhero blockbuster, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, delivered another record-setting performance in its second weekend.

Filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton’s movie earned $145 million in its sophomore frame and remained No. 1 in North America. The result marked a 59 percent decline from its opening weekend but still gave Brand New Day the third-best domestic second weekend of all time.

The film has now earned $655 million in North America. That gives it the highest 10-day domestic total in box office history.

‘Brand New Day’ Reaches $1.67 Billion Worldwide

The Spider-Man sequel has also collected $1 billion from international markets. It became the second-fastest movie to reach that overseas total, behind only Avengers: Endgame in April 2019.

Brand New Day has now earned $1.67 billion worldwide. That places the movie at No. 12 on the list of highest-grossing films of all time.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens still holds the record for the biggest domestic second weekend. The 2015 film earned $149.2 million, while Endgame remains No. 2 with $147.3 million.

The previous Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, had held Sony’s record for the biggest second weekend. It earned $84.5 million in December 2021, although the film faced very little theatrical competition as the industry continued emerging from COVID.

Summer Box Office Nears $4 Billion

The strong Spider-Man performance comes after last weekend’s movies combined for $435 million. That represented the biggest weekend ever at the North American box office.

The summer box office now stands at an estimated $3.985 billion, according to Rentrak. It should cross $4 billion on Monday, keeping the all-time summer record of $4.755 billion from 2013 potentially within reach.

Spider-Man Continues Breaking Records

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been setting records since its launch. The movie posted the highest-grossing first week in domestic box office history.

It surpassed $500 million in North America during its first seven days. That made it the fastest movie ever to reach the half-billion-dollar mark, beating Endgame, which needed eight days.

Brand New Day also set domestic box office records for both Monday and Tuesday. The movie crossed $1 billion worldwide in just six days, making it the second-fastest film to reach that milestone behind Endgame.

The movie also established records for Thursday previews and its domestic opening Friday. Its debut became the biggest opening weekend in Sony Pictures history.

After battling Endgame throughout its opening weekend, Spider-Man ultimately took the domestic record. Final numbers released Monday put Brand New Day at $360 million.

That total surpassed the $357.1 million domestic opening of Endgame. However, Endgame retained the worldwide opening weekend record with its $1.2 billion global launch.

Why Spider-Man Keeps Connecting

Rentrak’s Paul Dergarabedian said the film’s success challenges the idea that audiences have grown tired of superhero movies. He believes moviegoers respond to specific characters, brands and the quality of the films themselves.

“I’ve always said there’s no such thing as superhero fatigue,” Dergarabedian tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s just bad marketing or bad movie fatigue rolled into one. I don’t think there’s any bias against the superhero genre; however, there are certain characters and brands that are seemingly immune to falling out of favor with moviegoers.”

Dergarabedian also points to the communal experience surrounding Brand New Day. He describes its appeal as “incredibly appealing to young people in any era: to be part of something really cool, social and fun.”

Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo join Holland and Zendaya in the cast. The story follows Marvel’s signature hero as he faces a lonely existence before an invisible enemy targets him.

Marvel Studios and Amy Pascal produced the film. Spider-Man: Brand New Day carries a $225 million production budget.

‘The Odyssey’ Holds Strong at No. 2

Universal’s The Odyssey remained in second place during its fourth weekend. Christopher Nolan’s mythological epic earned another $31.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $461.1 million.

The film crossed $1 billion worldwide Thursday. It became Nolan’s third movie to reach that milestone, following The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

The Odyssey has also reached another major benchmark for its director. It is now the highest-grossing film of Nolan’s career.

‘One Night Only’ Debuts in Third

Universal also claimed the weekend’s No. 3 position with romantic comedy One Night Only. The film opened with $5.7 million from 3,012 North American screens.

Women accounted for 68 percent of the audience. Two-thirds of moviegoers were between 18 and 34 years old, and audiences gave the film a B+ CinemaScore.

Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner star as two single New Yorkers searching for partners. The story takes place on the one night each year when premarital sex is permitted.

Director Will Gluck’s film opened at a level similar to his previous feature, Anyone but You. That movie, starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney, debuted with $6 million for Sony in 2023 before strong word of mouth turned it into a sleeper hit.

Reviews for One Night Only have been mixed. The movie holds a 46 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Hollywood Reporter chief film critic David Rooney praised the chemistry between the leads. He wrote that their “easygoing chemistry makes us root for them to get over the many contrived hurdles.”

‘Super Troopers 3’ Opens in Fourth

Super Troopers 3 debuted in fourth place with $4 million from 2,760 North American screens. Audiences gave the Searchlight release a B- CinemaScore.

Jay Chandrasekhar directed the latest installment in the comedy franchise about Vermont state troopers. The series began with the original Super Troopers in 2001.

THR critic Frank Scheck suggested the sequel is unlikely to attract many newcomers. His review said that, for viewers who are not already fans of the franchise, the third movie is “unlikely to bring you into the fold.”

The franchise previously returned to theaters with Super Troopers 2 in 2018. That sequel opened with $15.1 million and finished with $30.6 million domestically.

The original Super Troopers opened in 2001. It earned $6.2 million during its debut weekend.

‘Toy Story 5’ Pushes Past Previous Franchise Films

Toy Story 5 took fifth place with $3.9 million during its eighth weekend. The Pixar animated sequel has now earned $470.4 million domestically.

Its worldwide total stands at $1.094 billion. That makes it Pixar’s third-highest-grossing movie and gives it the biggest global total in the Toy Story franchise, surpassing the previous two films.

Eli Roth’s ‘Ice Cream Man’ Lands in Eighth

Director Eli Roth’s Ice Cream Man also debuted this weekend. The slasher movie earned $2 million from 1,090 domestic screens to finish in eighth place.

The Iconic Events release currently holds a 28 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. Scheck wrote in his review that the movie “can only be described as sick and twisted.”

‘Tony’ Scores a Strong Limited Debut

A24’s Tony opened on six North American screens and delivered one of the weekend’s strongest per-theater performances. Director Matt Johnson’s movie earned $348,955, averaging $58,159 per screen.

Dominic Sessa stars as a 19-year-old Anthony Bourdain. The story follows Bourdain as he takes a summer job at a Cape Cod restaurant years before becoming a celebrity chef.

The film has earned a 95 percent Rotten Tomatoes score from critics. Rooney praised its “idiosyncratic charm that fits the title character.”

Tony will expand into additional theaters next weekend. A nationwide release follows on Aug. 21.

‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’ Begins Limited Run

Mubi also launched Jane Schoenbrun’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma on five screens in New York and Los Angeles. The film earned $251,500 for a strong average of $50,300 per screen.

Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson star in the movie. Its story centers on a director making a sequel to a slasher film.

Rooney described the movie in his review as “captivating in both its confusion and honesty.” The film adds more theaters next weekend before expanding nationwide on Aug. 21.

The top 12 movies of the weekend, as of Sunday, August 9, are as follows.
